Our hot water heater, which is down in the basement, has been leaking for the past two days and consequently we've had to turn off the water in order to stop the flow. We can turn it on briefly to take a shower and do other basic things but until it's fixed, we have to pretty much leave it off.
The plumber's been here once already and unfortunately has to come back again today, as the fellow he sent to do the job the first time didn't do it right. In fact, while I was at work I got a semi-desperate call from my kids informing me that it was leaking again and so I had to talk them through turning off the main valve.
Yesterday morning as I was waiting for the repairmen to come, I'd think, Well, I should do such and such, and then I'd realize, Oh, I can't do that without water. I couldn't wash the dishes, I couldn't do the laundry, I couldn't wash my hands after doing something yucky. You need water to do so many routine things around the house.
Lord knows I'm guilty of taking it for granted. We have municipal water, not a well, so even when the power goes off we always have cold running water, hence I never question it. Not having it at my immediate disposal has been a real eye opener, let me tell you.

p.s. The plumber is here now but he just informed me he has to go get a shorter nipple to make the new valve work. That's plumber talk, ya know.
Isn't that the truth? Here, the power went off suddenly yesterday
afternoon. After I went around lighting candles because sometimes these go
on for hours or recurr without warning, I was just standing in my house
thinking how I could occupy myself. Nope, can't do that, or that, or that.
And leaks, yikes. A pipe underneath our walk-in closet burst several
months ago, making a hellacious mess, and yes, we had to turn off the hot
water until Husband could fix it. Awful. I like your songs, though!
yeah, i think losing power is even worse, because even though i couldn't do
some of my chores, at least i could still blog without water! we are a
thoroughly technology/utility dependent society, aren't we?
We have a well and when the power goes out here, which is usually whenever
we get a storm or strong winds, we can't use the water at all. Can't even
flush the toilet. We had a snow storm a few years ago and the power was out
for almost a week and we had to basically move to a friend's house. I feel
for you. And thanks for calling it a "hot water heater." I had an argument
with my gf where she told me that term is incorrect, it is simply a water
heater. Thanks for the music. :)
g8--i hear you about the well when the power goes out. it's a real drag!
for your sake i hope you don't live in too stormy of a place! and you know,
i've never thought about "hot water heater" being redundant--we just always
called it that. but of course, what other kind of water would it heat??
very silly! oh well, i guess it's what you're used to. my mother used to
call the fridge the icebox and i still say that sometimes. : ) i'm glad you
like the music. thanks for saying so!

We were without hot water for the last few days. You're kind of taught to
value water in general here, because there is so little of it. I'm still
not used to conservation, but get reminded every time we get a water bill!
maybe our water bill will be a little lower since we were forced to
conserve a little! we are probably big wasters and could do a lot better
than we do, although i'd rather not be made to do it this way!
I was without water one day this week too! How funny. Luckily it was
because of something the city was doing to the pipes so I had enough notice
to fill up all my pots and pitchers with water to get through the day.
