Sometimes I Wish I Could Write, I Mean Really Write

posted Sunday, 19 November 2006
All this talk about lyrics makes me wish I could write, I mean really write. Beautiful poems, meaningful prose, essays that would make you stop and think and challenge your mind. Some of the blogs I read regularly are extremely well-written, and I love to visit them just for what they have to say; the mp3s are secondary.
I'm not sure where I'm going with this. It's just that sometimes I write things for myself and think, hey, that's a pretty good image, I wonder if I could use that in a post? Or I leave a comment for someone and think, dang, that was funny! Wish I could put that up on my own blog (which I've done, btw).
Here's an example of something I wrote that I wish I could use--purposefully, that is: "It's times like these that a little piece of me breaks off and turns into crumbs, into bits of nothing that can't be put back together." That's not too bad, right? It's an OK image, except that there's no context to put it in. (What does happen to those crumbs, anyway?) And then there's this: "She couldn't resist tugging on his shirt sleeve, saying here I am, please don't forget about me." That one's a bit more cliche, but I still like it.
I think my trouble is that I have a hard time conceptualizing the whole. I can see parts of it, glimpses of something bigger, but when it comes to creative writing and imagery, I really only ever get flashes of inspiration. I never see the entire thing. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to stick with the music and not beat myself up about something that I can't do much about. Something I'd do well to remember in all parts of my life.
Rufus Wainwright--"Crumb by Crumb" mp3 off Want Two (buy).
RJD2--"Ghostwriter" mp3 off Dead Ringer (buy) This is a slightly ironic inclusion, as it's an instrumental. Heh heh.
The Decemberists--"Sister, I'm a Poet (Morrissey)" mp3 Live at Nocturnal in Portland.
The Russian Futurists--"A Telegram From the Future" mp3 off Let's Get Ready to Crumble (buy). I love this song. Someone recently told me they had the perfect song for me, but I can almost guarantee it's not going to sound like this.
And isn't it odd that I don't seem to have much of a desire to write music? You'd think I'd want to express myself that way most of all. Hmmm. I'll have to give that some more thought.
Apropos of nothing, except kitties, of course, is this fabulous find: www.stuffonmycat.com, a website solely dedicated to photos of cats with stuff piled on them. Check it out.

I think your writing is quite good. Writing only becomes better the more you practice it - just like playing an imstrument or something like that.

Oh, and that cat site is beyond hilarious!

thanks, andy. i think you're right about the practicing part, for sure. only i think i'm talking about writing something more special or artistic. i don't know. it's like i can smell it but i can't taste it, and it's making me hungry.

and all those poor kitties--some of them look so put out!

all mp3s are for sampling purposes only. you like it? you buy it. you want me to take it down? let me know. and for the uninitiated, if you wish to listen to a song, click on the little blue arrows and they will stream. thanks, your host and music lover, mjrc.
