When You're Home Alone . . .

posted Tuesday, 6 January 2009

When you're home alone, do you lock the bathroom door? Do you even shut it?

I learned a long time ago that I had to lock the door when my kids were around or else I'd have no privacy whatsoever. I also learned that even if they are outside playing, if I'm in the bathroom nearest the back door it's best to bolt it. I've been intruded upon by more than one child who didn't bother to knock in his rush to get in.

So now I lock it even when I'm home by myself. It's a habit--more like a reflex--and I have to consciously tell myself "there's no one else here, it's OK" in order to not do it.

Marching Band--"Home Alone IV" mp3 off Sparks Large (buy)

Another thing I do when I'm home alone is listen to the contrast podcast (although not necessarily in the bathroom). Today's episode is "B-sides." I'm not in it because I don't own any vinyl 7" records, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't go and enjoy it (right here). Next week we return to the theme of the human body and the focus will be "The feet." Perhaps you've made a New Year's Resolution to contribute to the contrast podcast--this would be a great week to get in on the fun.

Hey, in case you haven't had your fill of year-end "top" lists, you can head over to Blog Fresh Radio and/or The Hype Machine, as they've got a joint effort up called the The Hype Machine 2008 Music Blog Zeitgeist. I got to be in it again this year, as did Matthew from Song, by Toad and Bill from Sound Bites (he formerly of Blog Fresh Radio fame). They're putting up 10 albums a day for five days (today is day 2), so I haven't heard the whole thing yet. One last note, Imeem is streaming all 50 albums in their entireties, which is pretty cool. Actually, the best thing about all these year-end lists is that it forces (well, encourages) me to listen to music I might otherwise have just ignored, so I really enjoy them.

I don't lock the bathroom door at all. There's no lock on the toilet so that's not an option. There is a lock on the bathroom, which is just a shower and a basin, but since it's in a half-renovated state and there's a bit of a gap right up the top where the walls don't fully join to the roof, you can hear when there's someone in there, so I don't bother. I know that no-one is going to come barging in.

In regards to whether or not you even shut the door when you're home alone...well... It's an automatic thing to shut the door when you're on the loo, but I guess when I think about it there's no great need to is there? It's kinda like you're king of the castle then!

I'd never do it if I wasn't home alone though. I remember an old episode of Sex In The City where Miranda's going out with this guy who pees in front of her while she's in the bathroom and who also comes in there and tries to talk to her when she's on the loo. Now that's gross.

What interesting directions your posts lead us in Marcy!

I never lock anything. The Strokes are the greatest.

My little boys throws a strop if he can't follow me into the bathroom. It's OK for now, but I hope he gets over it soon...

agnes--"interesting" is a very nice way of putting it! ;-) the funny thing is, i was home alone when i realized this--very much king of the castle, as you say--and i wondered if i was weird or something!

hanan--you're a lucky soul! and i love me some strokes, too. i wish they'd make another record as good as this one.

afm--oh, yeah, that stage lasts for a while. actually at his age it's better to have him in there with you so you can keep on eye on him. it's amazing how much trouble they can get into in the short amount of time it takes to "do your thing" as it were!

When nobody's around, I leave the door wide open! If anyone's home, I lock it, as I have been walked in on before, too.

Nobody seems to want me around here unless I'm in the bathroom or on the phone. ;)

I live by myself and I still shut and lock the door. You know, if someone breaks in, I won't be caught like that :)

andy--and that's a very important consideration! ;-) i think if i lived completely alone, i might still shut the door but probably not lock it, but at this point it would take years to break the habit i'm in.

lol! it's nothing but the highest-level of discourse here at liyi. ;-) i kind of miss having the cat follow me into the bathroom. not enough to make me get another one, but i do miss it a little bit.

all mp3s are for sampling purposes only. you like it? you buy it. you want me to take it down? let me know. and for the uninitiated, if you wish to listen to a song, click on the little blue arrows and they will stream. thanks, your host and music lover, mjrc.
