Here's a silly question. Seeing as it's that time of year when people love to throw parties, what do you prefer to bring, an appetizer or dessert?
I took an informal poll of my family at dinner last night, and my youngest daughter said, "dessert, because it's funner." My son said, "appetizer, because you can just buy a bag of chips." My husband went with appetizer, too, although he didn't have an especially noteworthy reason.
I'm kind of torn. Desserts are easier--and funner--as you can always make brownies or chocolate chip cookies and kids will be happy. But if it's a more grown-up affair, then I think something that takes a little more effort is required, hence, I opt for the appetizer.
I'm going to a function this weekend and I said I'd bring deviled eggs. They take a little bit of work but are so worth it in the end, don't you think? My mouth is watering already.

Googling deviled eggs, have never figured out what they are....
I am almost 40 and I can honestly say that I always gravitate to the
brownie and chocolate chip cookie trays. I have never, and will never, eat
a deviled egg unless I am 100% certain that it was made by either my wife
or my mother (or my cousin's ex-husband Paul, who makes a splendid deviled
egg, but that's another story).
agnes--deviled eggs are simply hard-boiled eggs sliced in half with the
yolks popped out, mashed together with mayonnaise, a little vinegar (i like
to use apple cider vinegar), salt and a bit of mustard (i also like to use
a bit of horseradish). after you mix it all, you refill the eggs and
sprinkle a little paprika or parsley on top. they're very yummy, no matter
what campfire and battlefields may tell you!
The men love those deviled eggs!
1 can of those Pillsbury crescent rolls
8 ounces cubed Brie cheese
3/4 cup whole berry or jelled cranberry sauce
1/2 cup chopped pecans
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Lightly grease a 12 inch pizza pan or 9x13 inch baking dish. Unroll the crescent rolls and separate into triangles. Arrange in the pan with tips towards the center and lightly press together. Bake 5 minutes, or until lightly brown.
Remove from the oven and sprinkle with pieces of Brie cheese. Spoon the cranberry sauce over the cheese. Top with pecans. Bake an additional 8 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the crust is golden brown. Cool 5 minutes and cut into wedges or squares.
Any kind of jam or preserves may be used in place of cranberry sauce.
mmm, that crescent roll/brie cheese thing sounds delicious! i'm not against
using prepared ingredients at all, so i may give that one a try some time.
thanks for the ideas! re: the deviled eggs--my son eats them in one bite.
boy, can he suck them down!
Ooh ok Marcy, they sound pretty good actually! Might have to try it one
day. And Nat, that recipe of yours sounds awesome!
I wish I could take credit for it, but a neighbor brought it to a bunco
game once, and we all went nuts for it. I've made it with almonds, pecans,
or walnuts.
agnes--much better than those green eggs you were looking at!
Bunco? Wozzat??
my deviled eggs are life affirming!! bunco is a game played with dice. see
wikipedia for details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bunco
it's fun but i wouldn't call it life affirming. ;-)
Appetizers definitely, but that's only because I can't bake. Easy peasy
appetizer - sausage cheese balls - Bisquick, spicy sausage, cheese, bit of
cayenne. Bake until golden - delicious and massively unhealthy.
Now this is my kind of post...food glorious food! I love to cook so I'll
bring whatever is needed. Recent hits have been cranberry salsa with
tortilla chips, Blue cheese pecan phyllo bites (made with those easy frozen
phyllo shells) and Buffalo chicken wing dip. Caramel fudge brownies and
toffee were successful desserts brought to other gatherings.
afm--those sound really good! i don't think the calories count if it comes
in ball form. ;-)
I am definitely with Nat about the brie. Dang, I love that stuff. En
croute, as she suggests, or a very easy topping made of sauteed onion,
rosemary, dried cranberries and sherry. The cranberries absorb some of the
sherry in the cooking, and it is to DIE for. Oh geez, I have to hold onto
my desk with both hands for a moment....I am faint with lust. Oh, maybe
that's just hunger.
