We Did It!!!!!

posted Wednesday, 5 November 2008

We did it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am overcome with emotion--relief, joy, pride, excitement--but most of all, hope. Hope won this election. Hope manifest itself in the form of a man who reached out to people everywhere with a message of inspiration and fairness and the sense that together, we can do anything.

I haven't ever felt this way after an election. Let me tell you, it feels pretty damn good!!

Hookers Green No. 1--"Bloody Great Big Fucking Party" mp3 (Looks like I posted this track two years ago on the day after election day. It's just one of those songs!)

The Thermals--"Remember Today" mp3 off Fuckin A (buy)

Embee (Feat. Rico Wondahman)--"Wondahful" mp3 off Tellings from Solitaria (buy)

I just want to share what a privilege it was to do what I did yesterday, which was drive students from a historically black university to the polls. I drove a 13-passenger van, paid for by the Obama campaign, and probably took upwards of 150 students myself. There was another big van and 6 or 7 other cars and mini-vans who drove all day as well, so all in all we probably transported 750 to 800 students throughout the day. The little polling place had never seen so many voters before and some of those kids waited in line more than four hours to cast their votes. But they made history, and it was worth it.

Needless to say, I'm exhausted today. It's a good tired, but I am looking forward to relaxing a bit.

You drove 150 to the polls yourself? Wow! That is some kinda serious campaign work. I'm just like, wow, some impressed. I had no idea you were such a soldier.

Good for you. There aren't enough people in any country who really care enough about democracy to put out that kind of effort.

(But, I'm betting, if you weren't a junkie before, you're certainly going to be one now, right?)

first of all, excuse me for my english.

in the second place:

i'm portuguese, living in my country.

i have to confess that i cried at 4 am (lisbon time), when i knew that obama won the election. in fact, i was awake, reading cnn.com, even knowing that at 6:30 am i needed to wake up, to go to work. the climate was tense, we were all nervous and anxious about the elections, as if it were our national elections (without the voting part of the process!!). around europe, and mainly in portugal and spain, 70% of the population was praying for obama.

i don't know if you, americans, have the real notion about what happened last night. because it wasn't only your victory, it wasn't only your change that was in cause.

last night, in my country and in europe, we won. change started over here, 7000 km away (about 5 thousand miles), at the same time.

congratulations, work hard for yourselves, as we wil be working hard in this side of the sea.

Well done on being a part of the Obama ground game. That's what made the difference in the swing states!

nat--i am still tired! no rest for the weary, i guess. but thank you for the thought. : )

brian--amen!

lyle--keep in mind i drove for eight hours--and people were still doing it as late as 8:00 p.m. but yeah, i'd say about 150 kids. the obama campaign's ground game was very impressive. there were a lot of extremely dedicated souls out there. one guy who is active in local politics actually turned over his house to the campaign. it was crawling with people during the last several weeks of the campaign. he even sacrificed his lawn, as people parked their cars all over it, front and back. talk about being a good soldier! it was an incredible experience to be a part of something like this. and hell yes i'm a junkie! in fact, i think i'm in withdrawal at the moment. : )

evandro--wow, thank you for sharing that about your reaction and the way people are feeling across the world. i think some people have an understanding about what this election means in other parts of the world, but you're right, most americans don't. it's good to know that we can count on the support of so many other people and countries, because as you say, there's a lot of work to be done, a lot of damage to repair.

afm--i feel honored to have been a part of this effort. the amazing thing is, it wasn't just the swing states that obama's organization was working so hard in--it was every state. amazing.
