Three Ways to Treat Yourself and Do Some Good at the Same Time

posted Sunday, 2 December 2007

Here are three easy ways to treat yourself to something special and not feel guilty about buying yourself a present just before Christmas, because you're doing something good at the same time.

The blog hard to find a friend has got a Christmas-themed compilation cd called Peace on Earth available for download at his site, and 100% of the money raised will go straight to Toys for Tots, which we all know is a worthy organization. The 18 songs are exclusive to this record and it features a diverse and wonderful list of performers (see track list below). Seven dollars is definitely a bargain for a record this great, and when you add in the fact that it's going to a worthy cause, it's really a steal.

Here's a taste of it if you need one to convince you:

The Long Winters--"Sometimes You Have to Work on Christmas (Sometimes)" mp3

1. Prayers & Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers - Shepherd's Song
2. Quiet Company - Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
3. Great Lake Swimmers - Gonna Make it Through This Year
4. Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin / Sweetwater Abilene - The Wheels Are Off
5. Chris Walla - Coventry Carol
6. David Karsten Daniels - In The Bleak Midwinter
7. Casiotone for the Painfully Alone - Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
8. The Winston Jazz Routine - Through the Snow
9. Via Audio - My Boo
10. The Long Winters - Sometimes You Have to Work on Christmas (Sometimes)
11. TW Walsh - Drop the Bomb
12. Ohtis - American Christians
13. Aaron Robinson - End of the Year
14. The Cotton Jones Basket Ride (Michael Nau of Page France) - White Christmas
15. American Music Club - Please Please
16. Johnny Bertram - Merry Christmas (You Won't Get What You Want)
17. Rosie Thomas - Christmas Time is Here
18. Sleeptalker - This is Christmas

Over at speed of dark, Linda points us toward The Cake Sale, a compilation cd that benefits the relief organization Oxfam Ireland. It looks like a fantastic album, with lots of unusal offerings. Linda describes it much better than I could, plus she has two tracks up as a taste, so you should visit her and read her post. You can also learn more about it here, at The Cake Sale website.

The third opportunity to do good and hear great music is to buy the compilation cd Causes 1 put out by Waxploitation. Money raised from its sales will go to help the crisis in Darfur via these three organizations: Doctors Without Borders, Human Rights Watch and Oxfam America. The thing is, you can only purchase it for 90 days (starting Nov. 27th) from iTunes. So educate yourself all about it here, and don't wait too long before you buy, because this is a limited time offer.

After looking over the contributors to these three albums, there is very little if any overlap, so there's bound to be something to please not only you but anyone else you know who loves music. Plus they're all exclusives. Now this is the kind of shopping I can wholeheartedly embrace.

with all the direct and indirect references to Seattle you have made in your musical choices I think you need to move here. Right now it's raining... YAY!

The long winters are a band that I don't pay enough attention to, thanks.

maybe i lived in seattle in a prior life or something? :) the long winters are wonderful, i like their older stuff better than last year's putting the days to bed, but even that's pretty good.

all mp3s are for sampling purposes only. you like it? you buy it. you want me to take it down? let me know. and for the uninitiated, if you wish to listen to a song, click on the little blue arrows and they will stream. thanks, your host and music lover, mjrc.
