Top 12 Country Songs of 2006

posted Thursday, 7 December 2006
Big news. Things are going to be different around here from now on. I've decided to go country, completely and totally country, all country all of the time. Why? Coz country songs have the best titles ever, that's why. Take these 12 tracks, for example. You really can't beat 'em. I'd like to see Sufjan write songs with titles like these, yep I sure would. My personal favorites are #s 5 and 4. Which ones do you like best?
12. I Hate Every Bone in Her Body But Mine.
11. It's Hard to Kiss the Lips At Night That Chewed Your Ass All Day.
10. If the Phone Don't Ring, You'll Know It's Me.
9. I Liked You Better Before I Got to Know You So Well.
8. I Still Miss You Baby, But My Aim's Gettin' Better.
7. I Wouldn't Take Her to a Dog Fight 'Cause I'm Afraid She'd Win.
6. I'll Marry You Tomorrow, But Let's Honeymoon Tonight.
5. I'm So Miserable Without You, It's Like You're Still Here.
4. If I Had Shot You When I First Wanted To, I'd Be Out Of Prison By Now.
3. My Wife Ran Off With My Best Friend and I Sure Do Miss Him.
2. She Got the Ring and I Got the Finger.

And the number 1 Country Song is:
1. I Ain't Never Gone to Bed With Ugly Women But I've Sure Woke Up With a Few.

Gotcha!
Too funny, eh? Oh, you know me, I love to kid. Actually, I think Mary-Chapin Carpenter is about as country as I can get. And for the record, I wish I could claim the following track as my theme song, only we all know it's about as likely to be true as the likelihood of my changing my blog into "lost in the country."
Mary-Chapin Carpenter--"I Take My Chances" mp3 off Come On, Come On (buy)
And this song is just gorgeous, filled with gentle reflection and tinged with regret. This is an example of her songwriting at its poignant best.

Hey, what do you know, she's playing in Glasgow Jan. 18. Someone should go and see her and write a review . . .

mjrc, your ideas for posts are excellent. I got this list by email, maybe from the same mutual friend, and I have a trove of country songs I love, although they're all about 10 years old now. They say imitation is the highest form of flattery, so look for some imitation from me soon...

I'm pretty sure "If the phone doesn't ring, it's me" actually *is* a country song!

If you like MCC, you might check out Patty Loveless. Alison Krauss is one of my favorites as well, although I hear more bluegrass from here than country (depends on which side of the country/western fence on which you sit!)...

definitely comes from our mutual friend. she sends me some of the funniest stuff. i don't know where she gets it. i've heard of alison krauss, but am not familiar with patty loveless. i'm not really a bluegrass gal, either, tho, so can only take it in small doses. i'm more of a patty griffin fan, if you'd consider her at all country.

I'll put a post together for you on this one. Country can be great, depending on the artist and mood. And I'm not talkin Shania Twain here. PG doesn't seem country to me, but I've only heard the one album (Flaming Red). Cheers!

If I ever get around to recording a country album I'm definitely calling it "You're the reason our kids are ugly"

I did see Willie nelson play here this year. He was excellent. Have to admit im not a country expert. It tends to get passed off with all the line dancing people over here. Used to share a flat with a line dancer (he drove me bonkers)

line dancing, also not my thing. ;-) however, i recently heard a willie nelson song that stopped me in my tracks. a cover of fleetwood mac's "songbird," no less. i think i may have to post it, i like it that much. people are really going to think i've lost my mind.

and you were supposed to let me know when you put up listen to this!!! it looks great, btw. i'll put up a link to it tomorrow. : )

all mp3s are for sampling purposes only. you like it? you buy it. you want me to take it down? let me know. and for the uninitiated, if you wish to listen to a song, click on the little blue arrows and they will stream. thanks, your host and music lover, mjrc.
