I thought of what I could submit to the contrast podcast a little too late this week, but that's OK. I can still share it with you, right? And you can listen to the podcast here.
The theme was "Every Tom, Dick or Harry," and I finally figured out that I could choose Rickie Lee Jones and still be on-theme.
Now, she's not everyone's cup of tea. In fact, I've had people tell me they can't stand to listen to her, but I've always dug her strange, warbling, somewhat hard-to-understand vocals.
This is one of my favorites, taken from a live in-studio performance at WXPN's World Cafe:
Rickie Lee Jones--"Second Chance" mp3 off Live at the World Cafe Vol. 18
She's got a fairly new album out called The Sermon on Exposition Boulevard, and this is off it:
Rickie Lee Jones--"Elvis Cadillac" mp3 off The Sermon on Exposition Boulevard (buy)
For a really thorough, wonderful article about her, read this over at lil mike's last known thoughts and random revelations. Here's her myspace. She's on tour in Europe for the rest of May and comes back to the States in June, with a show in Philly at World Cafe Live 6/18.
Next week, the theme on the ol' contrast podcast is "My Own Personal Theme Tune," so if you want to be part of the fun, I suggest you do it sooner rather than later!
GOD, I love her. LOVE the new cd, too, and all it's religious themes that
don't become preachy at all. One of my favorite cds so far this year.
i've only heard two tracks off it so far. sounds like i'll have to check
out the whole thing. she really takes me back, i must say. : )
gosh, stumbled in & gotta say thanx for the nice glowing review of my
rickie lee jones post a couple months back... i'm glad you were digging
it...
