How's about a little story.
About two years ago, there was a young man who worked at my local record shop and whenever I'd go in we used to discuss music. I was always talking up Broken Social Scene and he turned me on to Animal Collective. He was very nice and extremely helpful.
His Animal Collective recommendation, Feels, became one of my favorite albums at the time, and so I wanted to thank him for it, but he disappeared. He was never in the store when I was, so I finally asked about him and they told me he'd gotten sacked. Oh well, I thought, I'll never get to tell him how much I loved it.
Fast forward to this month, and lo and behold who do I see waiting tables at one of my favorite restaurants but said fellow, and he happened to have our table. He recognized me and we laughed and talked for a bit, and I finally got to thank him after all that time. That was when he gave me the best compliment I've had in a long time. He said, "Man, you are the hippest person over 30 I know!"
Made my day, that did, made my day.

Yeah, it's the little things like this that keep me from feeling old. I
teach first year undergraduates here at Oxford and every now and then one
of them recognizes my coolness - goes a long damn way!
Kind of like being carded, but better I'd say! Cool tracks, too, BTW.
That is awesome and what a small world it is when you run into him later
and he is your waiter. Pretty cool indeed.
chris--about the bloc party, sometimes it's the song titles that are more
important, if you know what i mean. ;-) i nearly forfeited my street cred
last year when i confessed i hadn't ever really listened to arcade fire, so
don't feel too bad about that!
