A Short List

posted Thursday, 8 January 2009

Here's a short list of music I managed to miss, skip or otherwise pass by during 2008 that I will now be paying much more attention to: The Seldom Seen Kid by Elbow, Do You Like Rock Music? by British Sea Power, The Stand Ins by Okkervil River, and The Night Is Ours by Youth Group.

Why I didn't listen to Elbow's album, I have no idea. I love it. It's gorgeous. I think it would have made my top-ten if I had. This is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in a long time.

Elbow--"One Day Like This" mp3 off The Seldom Seen Kid (buy)

I really wish there was a grace period or something like that wherein you could change or add to your year-end lists, because there are always records that slip by and then when you hear them you say, Why didn't I listen to that sooner? Linda over at speed of dark had thoughts along the same line in her post from the other day.

Okkervil River. Good stuff. But who cares if you overlooked it last year? You DID get to it, and that's what counts. The year matters not.

Yeah, I only heard one song from Elbow and completely overlooked Okkervil River. I am correcting that mistake.

I totally agree! I only realized, a week before my deadline, that I had listened to an earlier British Sea Power album and not the latest one! And of course they are both fantastic but I felt I couldn't add it to my list without a proper review. I want a do-over too LOL

I agree with your choices except for Okkervil River, that one just didn't grab me. But Elbows, oh hell yeah! Another one I missed last year.

Happy New Year! xoxox Tart

aw, thanks, tart! i've been thinking we would meet up eventually, seeing as we visit a lot of the same blogs--toad, fil, colin, etcl. : )

now you know what you've got to do next, don't you? start contributing to the contrast podcast. yep, consider yourself formally invited! just ask anyone, it's loads and loads of fun. i think fil was most instrumental in getting me started, and i've not regretted it a moment since. : )

I nearly fell out of my chair when I listed to that Elbows disc earlier this week, a purchase courtesy of Christmas. What an awesome soundscape they create! Would have been on my top 10 list for sure. Funny you would mention it!

British Sea Power - yes! Completely in love with them now. Okkervil have always been close to my heart of course. Elbow - still one I need to check out I'm afraid. Will get there eventually!

And Tart, you should definitely do the CP, it's great fun!

Frightened Rabbit tonight Marcy... still trying to figure out what crazy thing I'll get up to! Was actually at the same venue last night and it's quite small so I got to talk to the bands that were there then, so I might see if I can talk to FR tonight as well! How awesome will that be! Am just a little bit excited!

wre--i'm glad you like it. it's funny, i saw them on "live from abbey road" and really liked what i heard but never got around to buying it, then they had two songs on the festive fifty and i was like, what's wrong with me?? so i ordered it post-haste. i love his voice, especially, but you're right, they create a really full, complete sound.

agnes--oh, do have fun tonight! i love small venues where you can talk to the band. i'm looking forward to hearing all about it. but don't fret about doing anything crazy--i was just kidding! : )

Now I dont grudge Elbow all the success they're enjoying right now, but I've just never been able to appreaciate what they do at any point in time.

I have tried....quite a few times. But, if I could quote from a British Sea Power lyric......I Just Don't Get It.

Given the sort of stuff I normally like and appreciate, this might seem strange. But its just one of those weird things....

jc, i must say that i only sort of liked "leaders of the free world" and that an earlier album of theirs i sold back because i never listened to it. this one is different. if you haven't listened to it, then i would suggest giving it a try. if you still can't get into it, then, well, you tried and that's all a person can do, am i right?
