Here's a short list of music I managed to miss, skip or otherwise pass by during 2008 that I will now be paying much more attention to: The Seldom Seen Kid by Elbow, Do You Like Rock Music? by British Sea Power, The Stand Ins by Okkervil River, and The Night Is Ours by Youth Group.
Why I didn't listen to Elbow's album, I have no idea. I love it. It's gorgeous. I think it would have made my top-ten if I had. This is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in a long time.
Elbow--"One Day Like This" mp3 off The Seldom Seen Kid (buy)
I really wish there was a grace period or something like that wherein you could change or add to your year-end lists, because there are always records that slip by and then when you hear them you say, Why didn't I listen to that sooner? Linda over at speed of dark had thoughts along the same line in her post from the other day.
Okkervil River. Good stuff. But who cares if you overlooked it last year?
You DID get to it, and that's what counts. The year matters not.
Yeah, I only heard one song from Elbow and completely overlooked Okkervil
River. I am correcting that mistake.
I totally agree! I only realized, a week before my deadline, that I had
listened to an earlier British Sea Power album and not the latest one! And
of course they are both fantastic but I felt I couldn't add it to my list
without a proper review. I want a do-over too LOL
listening to the festive fifty brought several of these to my attention.
what would we do without it? without each other???
exactly! and to be totally geeky... without the elbows forum, that's
another place where really got to know bloggers like you who cared about
blogging :)
aw, thanks, tart! i've been thinking we would meet up eventually, seeing as
we visit a lot of the same blogs--toad, fil, colin, etcl. : )
I nearly fell out of my chair when I listed to that Elbows disc earlier
this week, a purchase courtesy of Christmas. What an awesome soundscape
they create! Would have been on my top 10 list for sure. Funny you would
mention it!
British Sea Power - yes! Completely in love with them now. Okkervil have
always been close to my heart of course. Elbow - still one I need to check
out I'm afraid. Will get there eventually!
wre--i'm glad you like it. it's funny, i saw them on "live from abbey road"
and really liked what i heard but never got around to buying it, then they
had two songs on the festive fifty and i was like, what's wrong with me??
so i ordered it post-haste. i love his voice, especially, but you're right,
they create a really full, complete sound.
I met Scott from FR...that was pretty bloody crazy!
aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! : )
Now I dont grudge Elbow all the success they're enjoying right now, but
I've just never been able to appreaciate what they do at any point in time.
jc, i must say that i only sort of liked "leaders of the free world" and
that an earlier album of theirs i sold back because i never listened to it.
this one is different. if you haven't listened to it, then i would suggest
giving it a try. if you still can't get into it, then, well, you tried and
that's all a person can do, am i right?
British Sea Power is very good - check out their first album as well.
