The Second Deadly Sin: The Contrast Podcast Examines Gluttony

posted Tuesday, 11 December 2007

If there are any of the seven deadly sins that I am guilty of, it is most definitely gluttony. I always want more than is good for me and I have almost no will power. Of course, I speak metaphorically, as when it comes to food these days, I'm actually a lot better than I ever used to be. But when it comes to certain other things, well, it's very hard for me to stop.

The opposite of gluttony, according to wikipedia, is abstinence, and therein lies the problem. It's extremely difficult for me to forgo anything. I could never do the whole give-something-up-for-Lent thing. Unless I absolutely have to do without something, like for my health or for my child's health, I am hard pressed to do it.

Oddly enough, however, I'm not in the podcast this week. The only relevant song I could come up with doesn't have anything to do with eating or drinking, although aside from that it's sort of appropriate for both the podcast and the season. My absence notwithstanding, you can consume the whole thing right here.

The Free Design--"Close Your Mouth (It's Christmas)" mp3 off Stars/Time/Bubbles/Love (buy) Is it just me, or does this sound like a song the Oompa-Loompas would have sung in the original Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory movie? Really, it does.**

You can sit back and relax regarding the next few weeks' worth of the contrast podcast, btw. Tim has put together a multi-part "festive fifty" podcast counting down the top fifty songs as voted by us, the contributors and the listeners of the cp. Make sure you check back in to see where your favorite songs came in.

And just in case you're worried you might be a glutton, there's a handy little quiz over at beliefnet that will give you the answer in 10 short questions.

**I swear I did not have prior knowledge of Tim's song choice for the podcast!

I'm not so sure I want to take that test... But I LOVE taking tests! I can't help myself! I hate when they end and I just want to go sharpen another pencil! :)

Gluttony seems like one of those things that it's easy to be really curious about - but then in the end it's better just not to ask. Know what I mean? A sure fire way to create an uncomfortable silence. Hey, there's a pretty good Contrast Podcast intro right there!

Right now I'm a glutton for egg nog. Cheers, WRE

The quiz sez "Spiritually, you might be a bit too thin." !!

I have to say that there were several questions where the correct answer for me wasn't given. Like the one about sending food back at a restaurant. I do send food back, on occasion, if it's really not prepared the way I ordered it. Like a steak that's well done when I wanted rare. Or (ahem) a dry martini that comes with chunks of ice floating around in it (a pet peeve). But there wasn't an answer that described my behavior.

Does this mean I need to bulk up a bit, spiritually? Please pass the Holy Egg Nog of Antioch.
