The contrast podcast is starting a new series: the human body. First up for consideration is "the heart" and it's a very good opening subject, I think. Go here to listen and/or download the episode.
I found it to be a pretty easy theme, at least at first, as I had 61 songs to choose from after a cursory look through my music library. I narrowed it down to 21 songs pretty quickly, although from there it got a little tricky. See, the song I kept coming back to doesn't have the word "heart" in the title. That's usually the criteria for me, the word is either in the song title or the band name, so I had to really think about it.
After serious consideration, though, I decided I had to go with this song by The Physics of Meaning because it is a near-perfect rendering of the yearning of the heart, and you really couldn't ask for more than that. So even though it doesn't fit the letter of the theme, it matches the spirit perfectly. And that's what really matters after all.
Next week the theme is simply "old." I can do old, can you?

This is an utterly gorgeous song, and the album is really beautiful, too. The Physics of Meaning is really Daniel Hart, who is a member of both John Vanderslice's and St. Vincent's bands and also contributes to the Polyphonic Spree and various others. Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent, contributes vocals throughout and the harmonies they produce are striking. There's a strength to this record, in his voice, the soaring strings, the dynamics and rhythmic choices he makes. It's not like any other album I've heard this year.

thanks, nat! i just finished listening to the whole thing and it's another
keeper. it was good to hear some zevon, too, although my son thought the
transition between the rammstein and your intro was too abrupt. i tried to
explain to him that that's why it's called the "contrast" podcast! : )
I thought it was a little awkward, too, but it went with the Neil Young
song quite well.
You should have seen Fil recording his intro. We did it on his laptop on
the desk of this tiny little hotel room (my, that sounded smutty, didn't it
;-)
I decided to limit the choices by not allowing myself to reference breaking
hearts or being heartbroken or anything about heartbreakers. that limited
me suitably enough :)
mentok--i can almost picture fil "becoming" the character he's voicing. i
mean, he gives it such gusto, how could he not. now, seeing him become
cheri or the man from s.l.i.m.e. might be even freakier! good thing this
wasn't the first time you two met, though. would have made quite the first
impression!
