I've only heard three songs by the Philadelphia-based band The A-Sides and I'm not sure what to make of them yet. They're definitely on the rock end of the indie spectrum and they've got a psychedelic edge to them, too.
The first track, "Cinematic," has got one of the best hooks I've heard in a long time. The chorus swirls and soars with the words: "say something cinematic or become a tragic figure, who never never never says nothing to remember." The whole song is extremely catchy, but there's something about the structure of it that's not quite the usual pop form. And that's OK, I mean, nobody says you have to stick to a particular pattern, that's for sure.
The second song I've heard is "S Falling," and it doesn't even pretend to play by the rules. I'm not even sure if I heard these two songs side-by-side that I could identify them as being by the same artist.
The third song, "Jump Back Jack," is complete pop perfection. In fact, there's something very Beatles-esque about the opening guitar riffs that grabs me immediately (can anybody tell me what Beatles song I'm thinking of? Seriously, I can't figure it out.)
I suppose if I need any more convincing that this is a band I need to pay attention to, this should clinch it: they're playing the TLA in Philly on April 27th with none other than Todd Rundgren, who just happens to be the musician who most influenced my musical outlook and tastes as I was growing up. Well, that might be the biggest understatement of the year. He was my idol, my inspiration and my saving grace, the one artist I'd choose above all others if I had to pick just one. I guess I don't need to think much more about it, do I?
