The Almost-Famous Contrast Podcast

posted Tuesday, 22 January 2008

I hate it when I can't be in the contrast podcast, but I just couldn't come up with a connection to the theme.

The theme is "my brush with fame" and I recollected and recollected but I just couldn't honestly say that I've ever had one. The closest I ever got was when I was a singer in a little jazz trio when I was in college, but that hardly amounts to fame no matter how hard you shake it.

I'm excited to see what everyone else came up with, though. I'm sure there will all sorts of wild and wacky stories, not to mention terrific music. So go here to listen to it or download it, and then next week maybe we can both join in again, as the theme will be "Pride," the third in a series of the seven deadly sins.

Remember the film Almost Famous? It has a great classic rock soundtrack, so here are a couple of my favorite songs off it in honor of the contrast podcast.

Todd Rundgren--"It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference" mp3 off Almost Famous Soundtrack (originally off Something/Anything) (buy)

Neil Young--"Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" mp3 off Almost Famous Soundtrack (originally off Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere)

I've had a few brushes with musicians, mostly at "meet and greet" things after shows. I mostly get all clammed up and cannot speak intelligently, especially when it's an artist I admire (JOhn Hiatt is one that comes to mind.) My hubby does much better at these things, and a couple of times he's had some good talks with the drummers (Kenny Blevins from Hiatt's band, Kenney Dale Johnson from Chris Isaak's band). I just get pics.

Once, my hubby's little classic rock cover band in FL opened for America. SInce we were hanging around backstage, we met them. I found Gerry Beckley very down to earth and engaging, while Dewey Bunnell was a snob. Another time, they opened for Poco, and both Rusty Young and Paul Cotton were very cool! I approached Rusty for an autograph before the show, in fact, before they even started getting set up. He seemed surprised, smiled, and said, "SURE THING!" Once they were going to open for Starship (GROAN!) and I opted to drive to Pensacola, FL to see Steve Forbert instead. It was a really hot day, and Steve played in the sun. NOt too many people were at the stage, but I was there with my son, who was a baby at the time (I covered his ears.) Steve kept commenting on my dancing with the baby, and after the show when he signed cds, he gave me a freebie and signed all of mine. He said it made him happy to see me dancing with the baby and that I made his day. He made mine, too.

I'm sorry, I can't shut up! LOL.

how on earth did you choose one song for the podcast?! lol! you more than make up for my lack of brushing with fame. :) i was going to share that i used to talk to the guy who played johnny bauer on guiding light--we lived in the same neighborhood in brooklyn--but i figured that was a little too far removed from the theme to count! and how cool that your husband was in a band that opened for so many big bands. and i loved steve forbert--he plays at a little bar near our town every so often. next time i should go see him and ask him if he remembers the lady dancing with the baby! :)

Yeah, I haven't met anyone famous - unless you count police chiefs and local theatre directors. Maybe one day, I'll happen to catch a glimpse of someone....

when you become a world-famous music journalist, you'll be the one we'll say "i knew him when he was a mere contrast podcast contributor . . " ;-)

all mp3s are for sampling purposes only. you like it? you buy it. you want me to take it down? let me know. and for the uninitiated, if you wish to listen to a song, click on the little blue arrows and they will stream. thanks, your host and music lover, mjrc.
