It's Friday and even though I'm not doing anything special this weekend (unlike my husband, who's attending his high school reunion--yes, he's going alone and yes I think he'll have a better time without me), I still get that "Friday feeling" of excitement and anticipation.
To kick off the weekend, I thought I'd mention a few things that are catching my ear. Three arrived through the portal of my inbox, the others I found when traipsing around the internets.
Andrew Bird is in the studio recording his new album (hooray!). In addition to playing a few shows here and there he's contributing to a blog called Measure for Measure in the New York Times. Several different musicians are sharing their songwriting stories and his first entry is a very revealing look at how he generates ideas, how the melodies that live in his head find their way out, and his complicated way of writing lyrics. He's a brilliant man. I find it especially intriguing how he says that he often realizes the meaning of the lyrics long after he's written them. Also, Rachel from untitled records has two lovely tunes off his previously unreleased in the States Soldier On EP, which you can find here.
Boo and Boo Too--"David Turns a Mystic" mp3 off Boo and Boo Too EP (buy) This is a very un-Andrew Bird-like song, but there's something about the shouting way they sing and the droning guitars and feedback that I like. It's actually the exact opposite kind of music you might imagine a mystic listening to, but that's OK, right? Let's not pigeonhole the mystics.
Alan Wilkis--"Milk and Cookies" mp3 off Babies Dream Big EP (buy--comes out 4/22) This song doesn't quite fit into any neat categories either. It's part electro, part dance, familiar yet quirky enough to be more like that distant cousin you remember visiting when you were little, but now that you're all grown up you might not recognize.
Alamo Race Track--"Stanley vs. Hannah" mp3 off Black Cat John Brown (buy) There's something cheerfully engaging about this boppy pop, although don't be misled, it's certainly not too happy to listen to.
Shitdisco--"Reactor Party (Emotiquon Remix)" mp3 And just in case you do have plans for this weekend, this remix should get you in the mood to go out and have a great time. It's funky fun and dance friendly but have no fear, it's not over-the-top disco, should you shy away from such things.
p.s. Did you know there's a blog called That Friday Feeling? I found it whilst combing through google images.
I know I get that Friday feeling as well even if I am not doing anything
special. It just feels good to get through the week. I hope you have a
wonderful weekend (your husband is quite brave I wouldn't go to my high
school reunion if you paid me. Of course my high school was huge and not
very intimate)
technically he's not going alone, he's got his two best buds from school
going with him, who also kind of threatened him with large amounts of pain
if he didn't go this time, so he decided to brave it! about andrew bird--i
don't think he could write a song i didn't like. : )
I too like Boo and Boo Too!! Especially the plinky-plonky off-kilter
keyboard lurking in the background. Many thanks, Dearest Marcy!
i thought boo and boo too might be up your alley! why, you could almost
call them rammy, don't you think? : )
