I'm introducting a new feature--don't laugh, I know you know I won't do it REGularly--nonetheless, it IS new. I'm calling it "Better Late Than Never" or "Resistance Is Futile," depending on which is more appropriate.
In this case, I'd say it's Better Late Than Never. I mean, it's not as though I've been resisting
Tapes 'n Tapes, I just never quite got around to them. I have this tendency to bypass what seem like really hot bands for the longest time before finally deciding to give them a listen. Usually, I am pleasantly surprised by what I hear and ask myself, Why did I take so long to check this out?
Such is the case with Tapes 'n Tapes. Yeah, I know, I'm REALLY late to this party. In my defense, I did download
"Insistor" several months ago. But it wasn't until I found several more tracks, put them on a disc, and listened to them in the car that I started to fully appreciate them.
And appreciate them I do. Especially front man Josh Grier, lead guitarist and vocalist. See, I'm enough of a musician that I can tell when music is being played well or badly, but the only instrument I can intelligently critique is the voice. And this guy can sing.
Now, I'm not saying he has an ear-candy type voice. I'm not even saying I love all the sounds he makes. But he takes big bites out of these songs and sings the hell out of them. He is not afraid to take chances and really use his voice. Just listen to him on
"Icedbergs." He is an amazing articulator. He plays his vocal chords as well as he plays guitar--if not better.
I read somewhere that TnT puts on an extremely tight, fantastic show. With Grier at the helm, I have no doubt that they do.
OK. I'm done gushing. Oh--did I mention how dumb I feel for ignoring these guys for so long?

Check them out on Letterman (via YouTube, of course) playing
"Insistor."
You can find several more tunes to download at
their site. And here's their
myspace.
Read this article in NME and see what you think. They REALLY like them, and there's an interesting definition of "indie" in there, too.
