Talk about things slipping by, well this is an embarrassing example. I'm not exactly sure why, but I never got around to submitting something to this week's contrast podcast. Kind of ironic after talking about how much I look forward to it each week. Yeesh. The best explanation is that I'm lazy and forgetful sometimes. Not a good combination!
Anyway, the theme was "1986," as in the year, and you can download/listen to it here. Next week's theme is "the martini." Now that's going to be interesting. And don't forget, you have until Nov. 27th to submit your top five songs of the year to Tim, which he will then formulate into a to-50 countdown list à la John Peel. Send them to: tim.young@rhul.ac.uk with "Contrast Podcast Festive 50" in the subject line. The more votes, the better the results, so make sure you join in the fun.
What would I have picked if I'd been so inclined this week? I don't know. That's part of the problem. I looked at a top-100 songs of the year list to get an idea and now I see why I don't have much to choose from. Lots of Madonna and Lionel Richie and Survivor ("Eye of the Tiger" is perhaps my all-time most detested song).
I did see this song, "Life in a Northern Town," and I remember liking it very much. It always made me cry, which as you know is the hallmark of a good song in my book. So here you go. Cry along with me.
The Dream Academy--"Life in a Northern Town" mp3 off The Dream Academy (buy) Well, I just looked this up and apparently it came out in 1985 but hit the charts in the U.S. in 1986, so I'm sticking with it even though technically it's not quite right.
I did like that song, too, but I got SO SICK of it after awhile. I
listened to a little rock radio here and there back then, but I had pretty
much had it with the synth-pop, lame-o music of the times. I do have some
music I like from those years, though, and almost submitted an R.E.M. song,
but went with the Go-Betweens instead. And Bruce Hornsby's The Way It Is
was another one I almost submitted (that was an excellent album!)
gah! i llllllllove this track!
nat--i think i'm like you, in that they overplayed a lot of songs (not much
different now, is it?) so much that i never want to hear them again. but
this one stayed fresh for me, for some reason. i thought about r.e.m., too,
but what i wanted to submit was from 1989, so that wouldn't quite work! : )
I like this song.
