I've been doing the iPod shuffle recently and lately it's been bringing up songs that I was totally into last summer. Makes me wonder why I'm not listening to them now? But that's a whole other discussion.
It has got me to thinking about what I WAS listening to and, more specifically, how I was finding new music. See, I had yet to discover the world of mp3 blogs and was wading my way through music magazine sites, iTunes, and buying soundtracks/compilation disks to see what I could find.
Overall, I didn't fare too badly. The
Garden State soundtrack led me to Frou Frou and Imogen Heap;
Six Feet Under (Vol. 1) to PJ Harvey, The Dandy Warhols, Sia and Zero 7;
Best Laid Plans soundtrack to Gomez and Neneh Cherry. And of course there were Death Cab for Cutie, Tegan and Sara, and Stars thrown in for good measure.
So I thought I'd put up a few songs from last summer, a couple others, maybe get you to thinking about why you stop listening to some stuff and why other music sticks with you.
PJ Harvey--
"One Time Too Many" mp3 off
Six Feet Under soundtrack (Vol. 1) (
buy)
This is one intense song. Play it nice and loud. On the soundtrack it follows Peggy Lee singing "I Love Being Here With You." The sequencing is perfect.
The Dandy Warhols--
"Bohemian Like You" mp3 off
Six Feet Under soundtrackCould there be a happier song? And it pays such fine homage to the Stones.
Zero 7--
"Distractions" mp3 off
Six Feet Under soundtrack
First time I ever heard Sia and to tell you the truth, I didn't really like her voice. Obviously she grew on me.
Frou Frou--
"Only Got One" mp3 off
Details (
buy)
This entire album is phenomenal. I played it so much I know every word, every pitch. It was hard to choose just one song. These other two are remixes that are new to me.
Frou Frou--
"Breathe In (Jasp 182 Mix)" mp3 Frou Frou--
"Must Be Dreaming (Soul Mekanik Remix)" mp3Neneh Cherry--
"Twisted Mess" mp3 off
Best Laid Plans soundtrack (
buy)
This song starts off deceptively simply, then it becomes all twisted and wrapped up in and around itself. I found it highly addictive.
Gomez--
"Tijuana Lady" mp3 off
Best Laid Plans soundtrack
Very early Gomez, originally off their 1998 album
Bring It On. Spooky, scratchy, sad.
