This Song Has Me Captivated

posted Monday, 27 November 2006
I put together a mixtape the other day with this song on it and thought I ought to share it. It's not exactly what you'd expect from me, but it's captivating with its beats and late-night lounge sound. And I love the vocals, even though I really can't understand much of what she's saying. Oh, her name's Bajka. The "main force" behind the band is Nico Schabel. Together with a few other talented musicians, they make up Radio Citizen.
Radio Citizen--"The Hop" mp3 off Berlin Serengeti (buy)
Radio Citizen on myspace. They have a medley up of several of their tunes, which gives you a nice taste of their sound. Check it out, they're playing twice next month in Berlin.
I guess it takes all kinds to make the world go round, and here's an example of someone who cares deeply about something that I guarantee we all take for granted: Ian's Shoelace Site. Every freakin' thing you ever wanted to know about the lowly shoelace, you can find out here.
The Arrogants--"Cool Shoes" mp3 off You've Always Known Best When to Say Goodbye (buy) The Arrogants have lots and lots of mp3s available on their site, so if you like them, you should avail yourself of their generosity.

I agree with Rachel.. all the good music is in the UK.

That Radio Citizen is awesome. Excellent choice, as usual. :)

Hmm. I have been thinking for some time about moving to Europe, since right around Novmber, 2000. Just when it seems to be improving here, you post this excellent Radio Citizen track. Damnit! So, are you actually going to Berlin for the show, or are you just tormenting us?

oh what i wouldn't give to take a little trip to berlin for a show. just dreaming this time, i'm afraid. i'm curious what they'd sound like live, though. maybe someone else will get to see them and report back to all of us statesiders . . . : )

Hello!

Sounds like a job for me. Hey mjrc - you used a picture! Is that a first? The buildings on the cover are berlin landmarks... west berlin landmarks. I don't like west berlin, I'm a firmly east berlin person. By the way, the arrogants are from california, and radio citizen are from berlin - why is everyone talking about going to the uk? Berlin is way better. Come over, we have a fold-out couch.

why, you read my not-so-subtle hints! by all means, go and check them out. you're right, i did use a picture, but it's not the first. i've been throwing them up sporadically for the past month or so--just wait until tomorrow. not sure how the uk got into the conversation, but you know us yanks, europe is all one place, is it not? ;-) thanks for the invite, i'll be sure to drop you a note before i show up!

Careful - associating or dissociating the UK with Europe has political connotations...

Won't be able to listen tonight - our power is out. I'm off to fight my way back to a cold, dark house. I'm envisaging storytime with the kids by the fire - it'll be fun!!

fil--hope you were able to keep warm last night. i think i'd rather lose power in the summer than in winter anyday. interesting about the uk/europe thing. i was being quite flip when i said that about europe being one place, but unfortunately i think many americans don't grasp much in the way of political distinctions.

Just relaxing for the Thanksgiving weekend, making more bread, recording my CP submission too late. I did post Sunday (including shouting you out--deservedly--again) and my failed CP effort.

Thanksgiving is really generally pretty great when you're doing housing, at my old job it got crazy though since almost 600 people would call to volunteer on Thanksgiving day and I had about 10-12 spots.

yeah, i saw that shout out and that you missed the podcast. i had to act fast to get in this time. it's getting pretty popular. and i guess everybody wants to help somehow during the holidays, helps put things in perspective.

all mp3s are for sampling purposes only. you like it? you buy it. you want me to take it down? let me know. and for the uninitiated, if you wish to listen to a song, click on the little blue arrows and they will stream. thanks, your host and music lover, mjrc.
