I Simply Remember My Favorite Songs, And Then I Don't Feel So Bad (Sometimes)

posted Thursday, 21 December 2006
Oh, my favorite songs of the year, how I love you. Yet how do I rank you? Each one of you has played a special role in my life, sometimes lifting me out of a dark, blue place, more times than not keeping me company while I was in that sad place. It doesn't seem fair to single out just one of you to say, "You are the song above all other songs," so I'm not going to do that.
What I've decided to do is group these cherished songs together by time of year instead. I'll start with the ones from early this year and proceed from there. It's the only way I can figure to sort them out.
Late Winter/Early Spring--This was the time of the Guillemots and Mates of State, Jenny Owen Youngs and Final Fantasy. I was younger then, and more light of heart. Can you tell?
Guillemots--"Trains to Brazil" mp3 off From the Cliffs EP (buy)
Jenny Owen Youngs--"Fuck Was I" mp3 off Batten the Hatches (buy)
Final Fantasy--"The Arctic Circle" mp3 off He Poos Clouds (buy)
Mates of State--"Like U Crazy" mp3 off Bring it Back (buy)
Late Spring/Early Summer--This was the time of bike rides and San Francisco and the warming of things. I found Lily Allen and Augie March and James Figurine, and let's not forget Think About Life and Goldfrapp. Mmmm.
Lily Allen--"Everything's Just Wonderful" mp3 off Alright, Still (buy)
Augie March--"Stranger Strange" mp3 off Moo, You Bloody Choir (buy)
James Figurine--"Apologies" mp3 off Mistake Mistake Mistake Mistake (buy)
Think About Life--"Paul Cries" mp3 off Think About Life (buy)
Goldfrapp--"Number 1" mp3 off Supernature (buy)
Summer/Early Fall--Let's see, summer wasn't unbearable, but it could've been better. There was that whole San Diego episode with all that sun, so I consoled myself with TV on the Radio, Gomez, The Russian Futurists, and Devotchka.
TV on the Radio--"Province" mp3 off Return to Cookie Mountain (buy)
The Russian Futurists--"Your Big Brown Eyes and My Big Broke Heart" mp3 off Me, Myself and Rye (buy)
Gomez--"See the World" mp3 off How We Operate (buy)
Devotchka--"How it Ends" mp3 off Little Miss Sunshine Soundtrack (buy)
Late Fall--Does anyone remember my feelings around the time change? I thought you might. Yes, as the days got shorter, my mood went into the shitter. But the music held steady. There was Snowden, Colour Revolt, Emily Haines and Fibes, Oh Fibes.
Snowden--"Anti-Anti" mp3 off Anti-Anti (buy)
Colour Revolt--"Mattresses Underwater" mp3 off Colour Revolt EP (buy)
Emily Haines--"Our Hell" mp3 off Knives Don't Have Your Back (buy)
Fibes, Oh Fibes--"Get Up" mp3 off Emotional (buy)
Nowadays--As winter approaches, I could really use some cheering up. Unfortunately, the songs I love most right now are some of the saddest ones yet. I find solace in Eastern Conference Champions, Cerys Matthews, and Pink Nasty (who is fabulous, btw--I'm waiting for her cd to arrive so I can review it).
Eastern Conference Champions--"Hollywood (Featuring Maura Davis)" mp3 off The Southampton Collection EP (buy) Please listen to this if you haven't already. From start to finish. Just let yourself be taken away.
Cerys Matthews--"Streets of New York" mp3 off Never Said Goodbye (buy) There's something about the chaotic way the drums, synths(?) and guitar begin this song that convey the feeling of leaving something behind and starting something new and having no idea what's coming next. It's intoxicating.
Pink Nasty--"BTK Blues" mp3 off Mold the Gold (buy) "Fast food and binge drinking, sometimes I feel I'm sinking, sinking in place." Aw, could it be any more true? And yes, I confess, this IS my number one song, just don't tell the others.

"BTK Blues" was my favorite, too. For a while there I thought I was the only one who was digging PN. PS I visit your site daily...just don't comment much. Merry Christmas

Holy gamoley! Wow we have been quite in sync this year, not only in the songs that made both our lists, but what was right when where like you said. I didn't know that anyone else had ever heard of Jenny Owens Young! Plus also, several, like the marvelous Fibes, Oh Fibes, you introduced me to.

Excellent excellent list and the way you put it makes perfect sense.

skeetmo--welcome to the comments! yeah, isn't pink nasty fantastic? i ordered her album and am checking the mailbox daily for its arrival. that's kind of the hold-up for my top-ten albums list, actually. i'm waiting to see if i'll like it enough to include it. : )

fb--thank you so much. we really have been in sync as of late. and thanks for saying that about the order of the list. i couldn't possibly have ranked them any other way.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Great list Marcy!!!

Guillemots, Final Fantasy and Mates of State were also playing on my headphones... Goldfrapp indeed. Gomez was on my consideration list.

And sad songs although may not lift your spirits in a energizing way,I think the beauty in the slow sad mellow melodies can be uplifting in it's own way. :)

Good work!!!

This is great, parallel to most people's end of year lists. Thanks.

rachel--so glad to see you in such high spirits! thanks. as i look back on this list, i think the only completely not-sad songs are like u crazy, number 1 and get up. that's not too bad considering the year i've had. : )

mp3--thank you, too. i think there was a certain unanimity of opinion across the board about a great many of these artists, and that's ok, right? ;-)

I spent a while going through this entire list and I'm very glad I did. I liked every single song on here. No list has ever been able to do that. You should get some kind of award or something. Excellent list!!

Thanks for the great list, love how you broke it down throughout the year, which totally makes sense since music moves so fast now. Thanks again!
