Oh, my favorite songs of the year, how I love you. Yet how do I rank you? Each one of you has played a special role in my life, sometimes lifting me out of a dark, blue place, more times than not keeping me company while I was in that sad place. It doesn't seem fair to single out just one of you to say, "You are the song above all other songs," so I'm not going to do that.
What I've decided to do is group these cherished songs together by time of year instead. I'll start with the ones from early this year and proceed from there. It's the only way I can figure to sort them out.
Late Winter/Early Spring--This was the time of the Guillemots and Mates of State, Jenny Owen Youngs and Final Fantasy. I was younger then, and more light of heart. Can you tell?

Summer/Early Fall--Let's see, summer wasn't unbearable, but it could've been better. There
was that whole San Diego episode with all that sun, so I consoled myself with TV on the Radio, Gomez, The Russian Futurists, and Devotchka.

Late Fall--Does anyone remember my feelings around
the time change? I thought you might. Yes, as the days got shorter, my mood went into the shitter. But the music held steady. There was Snowden, Colour Revolt, Emily Haines and Fibes, Oh Fibes.

Nowadays--As winter approaches, I could really use some cheering up. Unfortunately, the songs I love most right now are some of the saddest ones yet. I find solace in Eastern Conference Champions, Cerys Matthews, and Pink Nasty (who is fabulous, btw--I'm waiting for her cd to arrive so I can review it).
Eastern Conference Champions--
"Hollywood (Featuring Maura Davis)" mp3 off
The Southampton Collection EP (
buy) Please listen to this if you haven't already. From start to finish. Just let yourself be taken away.
Cerys Matthews--
"Streets of New York" mp3 off
Never Said Goodbye (
buy) There's something about the chaotic way the drums, synths(?) and guitar begin this song that convey the feeling of leaving something behind and starting something new and having no idea what's coming next. It's intoxicating.
Pink Nasty--
"BTK Blues" mp3 off
Mold the Gold (
buy) "Fast food and binge drinking, sometimes I feel I'm sinking, sinking in place." Aw, could it be any more true? And yes, I confess, this IS my number one song,
just don't tell the others.
