Shopping Sucks

posted Thursday, 29 November 2007

I went shopping for a dress yesterday, which I suppose doesn't qualify as news for most people, but you have to understand that I haven't bought a dress in about 8 years--maybe longer. I just don't wear dresses. Not only because I can never find one to fit, or one that has sleeves (what is up with all those sleeveless dresses? Don't they realize some of us want to cover our upper arms? Or that it's cold? Yeesh!), but also because I hate to wear pantyhose and nice shoes and slips. The last non-pants item I bought was a skirt to wear on Easter two years ago, and I think I've only worn it twice. Needless to say, it wasn't a whole lot of fun and I didn't have any luck at all finding something.

    Shopping sucks.

Modest Mouse--"Shit Luck" mp3 off The Lonesome Crowded West (buy)

Sidenote: If you listen to the words of this song, I think you can hear some foreshadowing of their latest album, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank . .  . which is either very astute of me or totally off base. Regardless, he gets the feeling I have while shopping across pretty well.

Wow, Mrs. Mentok is exactly the same way. I practically have to hit her over the head to spend money on herself. The two of you must be the only two women I know who don't like shopping.

well, i suppose i should qualify my abhorrence just a bit--i don't like shopping for clothes mostly, coz it's always such a pain. and groceries--i hate grocery shopping. and going to home depot-type places. but put me in a record shop and i could while away the hours quite happily. : ) but you should be grateful that mrs. m isn't a shopper--saves you guys money!

I hate wearing dresses and always have. ANd when forced to wear one, I go kicking and screaming and end up wanting to choke the floor personnel who tell me it looks good (it never, ever does!) Skirts are ok, but it's hard to find a good one for my body type, and I am slightly bow-legged, so I look ridiculous. I'll stick with pants and jeans, too! (Don't 'spose that'll go over when one of my kids gets hitched, though!)

I feel your pain!

Ugh. Shopping for dress up clothes sends me crazy. I like shopping in general but when I have to look for something specific I often want to rip my hair out...then buy a pair of shoes to make me feel better. :)

I'm on the hunt for a bridesmaid dress and there are none with sleeves and, yay, I get to pay extra because I am tall. Oh joy.

I totally agree - shopping sucks. For example, I view going to the mall as an exercise in spear-shopping. It's a highly targeted strike. In and out like a flash. I sprint around big, fat, lethargic people moving around the mall like pathetic fish in an aquarium. I get what I came for, and get out. Fingers crossed that no one gets hurt in the parking lot!

Now, wearing a dress, on the other hand.... ;)

I'd love to be able to shop for a dress... :( Dearest Wife loves shopping for clothes, shoes, and handbags, but she's incredibly frugal and has the supernatural ability to hone in on excellent deals like a bargain-seeking missile. So she's always "filling holes in her wardrobe" without hemorrhaging cash. Am I the luckiest man in creation, or wot???

Seriously, I would counsel anyone with shopping/clothes issues to look into the UK version of "What Not To Wear." The two hosts, Trinny & Susannah, come across as fashion bitches on wheels, but they're actually very sympathetic and dispense excellent, easy-to-follow advice. And they're a scream. If you can't find the TV show, don't bother with the US version - it's appallingly bad and the hosts make their subjects look cringeworthy and dreadful. Go find Trinny & Susannah's books instead.

Am I the only one who finds this post faintly arousing?

(Sorry. I'll get me coat.)

matthew--perhaps it's the comment thread that's slightly arousing--all this talk of men in dresses?

fil--i used to be a bargain shopper. in fact, it still hurts to pay full price for things, but i got over the need to buy things on sale a while ago. now my husband wishes i were still the frugal woman he married. : ) and i second all props to trinny and susannah!

wre--i think if i do commando shopping it's much better, but when you're on a mission for a particular kind of thing, sometimes you can't be quick about it. now about your wearing a dress . . . maybe you and fil should talk. ;-)

jag--i know about your bridesmaid adventures from your blog--i wish you all the luck in the known universe! unfortunately for me, tho, i have as much trouble finiding shoes as i do dresses. :(

nat--i'm with you. pants all the way. when i was young, i could never sit with my legs together, so i was always quite unladylike. maybe i'll try to find a pair of velvet trousers or something dressy like that. save myself some headache!

No Marcy, you said pantyhose. We don't use that term over here I don't think, and it just sounds naughty.

Pantyhose DOES sound kind of naughty, doesn't it!?! Once you've seen them, though, the naughtiness wears off. (IMHO.)

Now, about skirts. mjrc, since you profess to being unladilike (sp?), perhaps you should check out the "skort". Mrs. WRE loves them.

As for wearking a skirt, I personally think the Scots got it right with the kilt. Just looks practical, especially when climbing over large rocks so that you have a glass of strong alcohol while tormenting invaders with screechy music. This time of year, though, I believe the cold-breeze factor would tip the balance toward pants. Or perhaps more scotch.

wre--but see, if you were wearing your PANTYHOSE, your legs would be warmer! ;-)

matthew--i have a very disturbing story to tell about men and pantyhose, but i don't think i know you well enough to share it . . . ;-)
