Hi. My Name Is Mjrc and I'm Addicted to Indie Rock

posted Friday, 25 August 2006
Given the amount of remixes I post on this blog, you might think I am a huge dance music/electronica fan. I am a fan, to a certain degree, but like Colin says here, I am much more comfortable with my first love, indie rock.
So this post actually has two purposes. First is to acknowledge my indie-rock rut. ("Hi. My name is Mjrc and I am addicted to indie rock.") Yep, hard as I try, I can't seem to stray too far from it. It's always calling my name and it simply satisfies too many of my needs. But I'm working on expanding my musical horizons, which leads me to the second purpose of this post, which is that now I have a good excuse to share a few of the fine remixes I've found over the past couple months.
There seems to be a great deal of interest in remixes lately, doesn't there? Is it the summertime? Something in the warm air that stirs the desire to groove a little more than usual? I think that must be it. Although, upon closer examination, none of these remixes is particularly over-the-top dance music. (I'm saving those goodies for another post, so you'll have to come back in a few days and see what else I put together, OK?) That said, they've all got that certain something in the backbone of the beat that pulls you in and and makes you want to shake it. Well, makes me want to shake it, anyway.
Ratatat--"Wildcat (E*vax Remix)" mp3
Zero 7--"Home (Ben Watt Remix)" mp3
Tapes 'n Tapes--"Cowbell (The Black Eyes Remix)" mp3
The Diggs--"Everyone's Starting Over (Cassettes Won't Listen Remix)" mp3
The Polyphonic Spree--"Soldier Girl (The Go! Team Remix)" mp3
Spoon--"I Turn My Camera On (John McEntire Remix)" mp3
Jenny Wilson--"Let My Shoes Lead Me Forward (The Knife Remix)" mp3
Kings of Convenience--"I Don't Know What I Can Save You From (Royksopp Remix)" mp3
The Presets--"Are You The One? (Van She Remix)" mp3
Thanks to the following for these fabulous finds: another form of relief, korvaklapp, pound for pound, just like music, gorilla vs. bear, myself myself, and motel de moka.

Some lovely remixes here - it was very nice to hear the Kings of Convenience one in particular. I think, for me, most electronic music can seem a little lacking in soul or 'meaning'... I know there are exceptions, but... Generally I need lyrics to attach to the music. To help me understand it, in essence (I admit it, I'm a simple soul - and a curious one... I want to know things... and lyrics can say so much... sometimes). Having said that, I'm playing more and more electronic/laptop music these days - often featuring little if any lyrics. Perhaps I'm changing, finally catching up with the 21st C world. I need to move out of the C86 cul de sac at some point... :) Great post Mjrc. You've been on great form recently :)

oh, i'm totally a lyrics person, too. that and vocals, which is why most electronic music doesn't satisfy to the quite the same depth (i have a need to sing along!). about moving out of the C86 cul de sac, maybe you just need a vacation home in the electronic world, a nice place to visit but not necessarily to live in. : )

thanks for your kind words. they mean a lot.
