I promise not to overload you with Christmas tunes this year, but ever since we put up the tree, I'm a little bit more in the mood.
I'd like to share a few variations on a classic tune that I dearly love. "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" is one of my all-time favorites, and here are four different renditions.
The first dates from my childhood and is definitely responsible for forging my intense love of jazzy Christmas music. It's actually more swing than jazz, with a very pop feel to it.

The second is one I'm sure you're all familiar with. This takes me back to the day when you actually had to listen to the radio to hear songs, unlike today when any and all music is available at your fingertips. I used to wait and wait for them to play this song at Christmas time. I still love it dearly, especially the very beginning chord progression (once the song starts that is, not the vamping introduction).

The third returns to the jazzy side and is off one of my most treasured Christmas albums, Jingle Bell Jazz. It's in an oh-so-laidback style, as only the Dave Brubeck Quartet could conjure.

And here's its polar opposite, done with gusto and great big guitar chords by Sugarcult. Rock on, Santa Claus!

I was listening to your previous post of Tiger!Tiger! and felt a certain
mood that the this post just changed... can we say eclectic and mean it in
a non-post modern ironic kind of way? i love TT's jangly and slightly off
tune guitar playing. However, Brubeck is a master and to have heard him
play live in the 50's must have been like seeing Radiohead in the 90's.
Just a master in control and command of his music and instrument.
Post all the Xmas songs you like! I'm collecting for the future when my boy
will be old enough to appreciate them. Most Christmas songs are so twee,
that it's nice to have some alternatives.
Yep, I will "third" those first two comments. I love the Brubek. He's a
musician's musician, I think. Totally in control. I know talented
pianists who have played some of his pieces and the difficulty level is
just incredible. But when you hear him play it, it's smooth as honey.
three cheers for brubeck, then! : )
