Santa Claus Is Coming . . .

posted Thursday, 13 December 2007

I promise not to overload you with Christmas tunes this year, but ever since we put up the tree, I'm a little bit more in the mood.

I'd like to share a few variations on a classic tune that I dearly love. "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" is one of my all-time favorites, and here are four different renditions.

The first dates from my childhood and is definitely responsible for forging my intense love of jazzy Christmas music. It's actually more swing than jazz, with a very pop feel to it.

The Ames Brothers--"Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" mp3 off RCA Victor Presents Music for the Twelve Days of Christmas (buy--this is on ebay, so act fast if you want it)

The second is one I'm sure you're all familiar with. This takes me back to the day when you actually had to listen to the radio to hear songs, unlike today when any and all music is available at your fingertips. I used to wait and wait for them to play this song at Christmas time. I still love it dearly, especially the very beginning chord progression (once the song starts that is, not the vamping introduction).

Bruce Springsteen--"Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" mp3 Live in Atlanta 1978

The third returns to the jazzy side and is off one of my most treasured Christmas albums, Jingle Bell Jazz. It's in an  oh-so-laidback style, as only the Dave Brubeck Quartet could conjure.

The Dave Brubeck Quartet--"Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" mp3 off Jingle Bell Jazz (buy)

And here's its polar opposite, done with gusto and great big guitar chords by Sugarcult. Rock on, Santa Claus!

Sugarcult--"Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" mp3 off A Santa Cause 2: It's a Punk Rock Christmas (buy)

I was listening to your previous post of Tiger!Tiger! and felt a certain mood that the this post just changed... can we say eclectic and mean it in a non-post modern ironic kind of way? i love TT's jangly and slightly off tune guitar playing. However, Brubeck is a master and to have heard him play live in the 50's must have been like seeing Radiohead in the 90's. Just a master in control and command of his music and instrument.

well my friend, your tastes are eclectic and appreciated.

Post all the Xmas songs you like! I'm collecting for the future when my boy will be old enough to appreciate them. Most Christmas songs are so twee, that it's nice to have some alternatives.

As for your songs - The Boss's version is the most familiar to me, but I love the Brubeck version that you posted.

Yep, I will "third" those first two comments. I love the Brubek. He's a musician's musician, I think. Totally in control. I know talented pianists who have played some of his pieces and the difficulty level is just incredible. But when you hear him play it, it's smooth as honey.

I have one of his CHristmas CDs and it's just so nice to have that familiar melody, stirred up a bit, and served with a bit of spice. Something familiar, but a little different. Thanks for posting it.

three cheers for brubeck, then! : )

juan--eclectic is such a nice way of putting it, thank you. i'm a bit all over the map sometimes, it's true. depends what i'm writing about. now if you were to ask my kids, they think all my music sounds the same, so i suppose it's a matter of subjectivity. :)

chris--what a great idea to save up music for your baby. i say play it now, too! they're never too young to start. :)

wre--brubeck is indeed a master. still stirring things up, too, performing and such. i hope to be that "with it" when i'm his age. :) how's that egg nog?

all mp3s are for sampling purposes only. you like it? you buy it. you want me to take it down? let me know. and for the uninitiated, if you wish to listen to a song, click on the little blue arrows and they will stream. thanks, your host and music lover, mjrc.
