Rufus Wainwright and Neko Case at XPN

posted Thursday, 16 August 2007

I was going to visit my brother this weekend but my plans fell through and I was kind of bummed. At least, I was until I got the word that Rufus Wainwright and Neko Case are playing today's free-at-noon show at WXPN in Philadelphia. Sweet!

XPN's really got it going on these days. I mean, two weeks ago I saw Tegan and Sara, and now Rufus and Neko--what more could you ask for? Actually, every person who attends the show gets to fill out a card that asks "who would you like to see perform?" and I always put down as many groups as I can think of. Plus these shows are free. All you have to do is RSVP and then show up. It's pretty easy. They also broadcast the free-at-noon concerts as they happen, so you can listen here if you want.

Rufus is performing this evening at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts with "special guest Neko Case," which will be wonderful, I'm sure. I think you can still get tickets here.

Here's hoping Rufus and Neko do a duet or two this afternoon.

Rufus Wainwright--"Casanova in Hell (Live)" mp3 This is such a beautiful song.

Rufus Wainwright--"Chocolate and Cigarettes" mp3 off Poses (buy) This is such a beautiful album. His new one is called Release the Stars, which you can pick up here.

Neko Case --"That Teenage Feeling" mp3 off Fox Confessor Brings the Flood (buy) I'm not a huge fan of her solo work. You'd think I would be, but I like her with The New Pornographers better. This is a great song, though.

I was explaining to my husband who Rufus Wainwright is, son of Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, and I said he had a sister who sings, too, and he asked, Oh, does she sing that motherfucker song? And I was like, Yep, that's the one!

Isn't it funny how people resemble their dogs?

Ha ha - I didn't get your dog comment until I opened your post for real (not in a reader). I wonder if I look like my dog, or vice versa? Poor dog.

I REALLY want to see Neko live, but couln't bring myself to buy tickets for her show with Rufus - for a variety of reasons - but in large part becuase I am sure I would spend the whole night saying "woofus wainwight".

ross--i don't know if he sounds like stevo--i'll have to look him up. : )

wre--neko was something this morning. she sounded exactly like she does on her records. awesome. she looked a bit tired, though. musicians lead quite the nightlife, it seems, and even noon seems early to them. ;-) rufus, on the other hand, looked pretty good. sounded even better. but i understand your reluctance. i'm pretty sure mr. mjrc much preferred neko.

casey--thanks, you always know just the right thing to say! : )

all mp3s are for sampling purposes only. you like it? you buy it. you want me to take it down? let me know. and for the uninitiated, if you wish to listen to a song, click on the little blue arrows and they will stream. thanks, your host and music lover, mjrc.
