Rolling in Remixes

posted Tuesday, 10 April 2007

Last summer I was obsessed with remixes. I was also obsessed with James Figurine/Jimmy Tamborello. Well here's your chance to do a remix of your very own. Sub Pop Records is having a Dntel song remix contest. First prize is $500 and if you win your song will appear on a Dntel remix album. Sweet! Go here for the details. Contest ends May 29th. Oh yeah, Dntel is another one of Jimmy T.'s many incarnations (he's also half The Postal Service, but you already knew that).

Dntel --"Dumb Luck" mp3 off Dumb Luck (buy--comes out 4/24) Yes, it's supposed to sound like this.

Here are two remixes I just ran across. The first, a song by Skye, is lovely. Nouvelle Vague gives it a soft, sexy treatment, with some kind of Brazilian beat--samba? Bossa nova? Who knows. I like it because it's almost fast enough to make you want to move around a bit, but it's ultimately sad and dreamy. And her voice is sweet and delicate without being wispy, if you know what I mean. Skye is the former lead singer of Morcheeba, did you know that?

Skye --"What's Wrong With Me (Nouvelle Vague Remix)" mp3

The second one is not one I'd normally pick up on, but since it's done by my fave Cassettes Won't Listen, I thought I should give it a listen. Somehow, it works, even though it's an odd amalgamation of folks: CWL remixes El-P's "Flyentology," with Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails contributing vocals. I told you it was odd! Plus I think it's a take-off on Scientology. Did you know Trent Reznor plays the saxophone? And that he's 41 years old?

El-P --"Flyentology (Cassette's Won't Listen Remix Feat. Trent Reznor)" mp3

I've had a special request to do a full listing of all the remixes I have on hand, and I want you to know that I haven't forgotten, I'm just not sure how I want to do it, so I appreciate your patience as I figure it out. While you're waiting, why don't you pop on over to the contrast podcast for the latest in what's sure to be a classic series: "Musicians Introduce Their Own Songs, Part 5."

pik, that makes perfect sense! don't you just love her voice? something in it reminds me a little of feist, when feist is being all quiet. what do you think?
