And Now I Shall Rip What Little Indie Cred I Have to Shreds

posted Thursday, 11 January 2007
Oh dear friends, I have quite the confession to make, and I have a feeling you will be shocked and dismayed and that my indie cred will fall in tatters to the floor. (Is that melodramatic enough for you? I bet you think this is going to be really awful, don't you? It's kind of like that joke about how when you have to tell someone bad news you say, "I'm so sorry, but your kitten died in a fire--oh no, just joking! But I did break your favorite dish," and somehow that softens the blow. Well, whatever.)
I, your host and music lover, have never really listened to The Arcade Fire (arms over her head to deflect flying objects). It's true. I have Funeral, but on first listen it didn't hook me, and at the time I had so much other stuff to listen to that I let it lie by the wayside, gathering dust.  What can I say? It's really been my loss, hasn't it? I have no one to blame but myself. Lucky for me I'm not too proud to admit my mistakes!
Well, lately it seems the entire blogosphere has been whipped up into some kind of Arcade Fire frenzy in anticipation of their new album and upcoming tour, so I thought I ought to at least give it one more try. Plus, I figured it would serve well as music that has no emotional ties to anything--I can listen to it without any strings attached, if you know what I mean.
And guess what? It's really freaking good! Yeah, I love it. I can see what all the fuss is about and why people are so excited about new material. And why wouldn't I like it? It's got intense lyrics, wonderful melodies and vocals that are by turns fierce and subtle, and the strings, well, the strings are exceptional. Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy) contributed to them on Funeral and is working on the next album as well.
These two songs embody what is really grabbing me about their sound. The first, "Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)" makes me want to jump up and dance around. I love the power of it (ha). The other, "Neighborhood #4 (7 Kettles)" is like the other extreme, a ballad that evokes loss and yearning and is incredibly moving. But this album is so rich and so full that it really needs and deserves to be heard as a whole. It's substantial.
The Arcade Fire--"Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)" mp3 off Funeral (buy)
The Arcade Fire--"Neighborhood #4 (7 Kettles)" mp3 off Funeral
Check out this fan website for two reasons: first, the picture is brilliant, in that it totally gets across the feeling and energy the band must have while performing--at least, that's how I pictured them. Second, it lists five show dates and ticket info for them in New York, where they will play in February.
If you want to know more about their upcoming release, Neon Bible, you'd do well to check out the torture garden's last few posts as well as i guess i'm floating's post here.

Doh! They're literally playing within our campus, but unfortunately everything's sold out (of course). Unfortunately, I really haven't given them enough listens either, but I'm really looking forward to Neon Bible, and hope to see them later in the year. Thanks for the info!

I am going to completely ignore the Arcade Fire post (nothing person, ducks, they just make me want to turn on the car in the garage and leave it running, if you know what I mean...although Rebellion (Lies) is a dead perfect song)...and pop in to tell you how much I'm enjoying Pink Nasty! I might even have to check out her hardcore sex rapper brother! Thanks.

Since I'm basically bluffing my way amongst you MP3 types, I have no indie cred and can therefore render the objective opinion that Arcade Fire sounds fine to me...in fact, largely indistinguishable from the scores of coffee-house indie bands I hear on other sites. I'll further show my ignorance by asking: Why would saying so endanger a person's indie cred?

Hey, I just noticed the link. Thanks a bunch. I'll get you back shortly, sistah!

roland--i don't think you're the only one wishing they'd gotten tickets to one of those shows. maybe you could stand real close outside and hear them that way. ;-) i'm sure they'll do some proper shows later in the year.

liz--too funny! what can i say, i'm a sucker for strings and that kind of yelping singing, especially when it rocks out like they do. oh, but i'm sooooo glad you like the pink nasty. she's quite a find. her brother, well, the jury's still out on him . . . : )

mentok--how to explain. well, you know who sufjan stevens, is, right? well, arcade fire is about as big in the indie rock world as he is. their last album came out in 2004 and was a "big hit." hence my not ever really listening to them is akin to a sin--a sin of omission, i suppose. i mean, how can you really trust what i have to say about music if i haven't heard some of the best stuff to come out in the past two years? make sense? of course, most of this is tongue in cheek (at least, i hope it comes across that way). i'm glad to know my indie cred is still intact with you, anyway! and yeah, i was wondering when you'd notice the linkage! (i kid, i kid!) : )

Thank you for clearing that up. I have always confused the Arcade Fire, the Arctic Monkeys, Appleseed Cast, and Arab Strap (to the degree that my first draft of my favorites of 2006 credited the "Arcade Monkeys.") So now I know who is who, but unfortunately I don't think I'm with you on your conversion...

Man, to be able to listen to Funeral the first few times again... regardless of them being sacrosanct, the reason I love them as I do is I've never seen a better band live - and as well as this, I've never lasted as long listening to an album without getting sick of it as with Funeral. But I'm seriously trying to restrain my hyperbole with neon bible, and I reckon I'm doing a pretty ok job :)

fb--it can be confusing, can't it, all these bands with similar sounding names. actually, arcade monkeys is a pretty good one--somebody should snatch it up and use it! ;-)

shane--is that right, you're restraining the hyperbole? oh, i kid. it really is because of your enthusiasm that i decided to give them a listen. i am sort of kicking myself for not having embraced them sooner, but then again, better late than never, right? maybe when they do a proper u.s. tour i'll get lucky enough to see them perform.

Y'know, I'm actually a contrary, crotchety sorta bloke. No, really. My natural reaction is to run a mile from anything that is generally hyped. It's actually led me on occasion to stubbornly ignore certain music/books/films that I later found myself enjoying. Examples: Sufjan (Tristesse & Rachel were cyber-present at my conversion on that Road to Damascus), Jann Martel's 'Life of Pi,' 'Donnie Darko'. Arcade Fire is another case in point, but about a year ago I caught the video for 'Neighborhood #3' while channel surfing and actually quite enjoyed the muzak.

And as for indie street cred, don't be fooled: it's just another form of conformity... ;-)

have no fear, i have no aspirations to attain any "real" indie street cred. is there such a thing? i suppose there is, but lord knows i'll never have any!

i know exactly what you mean about shying away from the hype. have you heard the scroobius pip song called "thou shalt not kill" ? it's an incredible song, or rap, i guess, but in it he says something along the lines of "thou shalt not stop liking a band just because they've become popular," which is the inverse of what we're talking about here, but it gets the idea across.

p.s. love that very apropos biblical reference--you're good! was that when phil became fil? ;-)

hehehe

FiL is awesome! And like FiL I also run a mile in the opposite direction from anything that appears 3 or more times on the Hype machine popular tracks except for a few rare cases...I never really got on the Arcade Fire bus...And just as I made an alternate route around the Sufjan bus (who is currently now officially MAIN STREAM they played him on our main/only Alternative-Rock radio station today) I seem to have also found myself avoiding Arcade Fire, but since Shane says that they are amazing live I think I need to check them out live and then re-evaluate my route.

But I am very pleased you are loving them...have you heard any of their songs that have been floating around for the last month?

i've made a pledge to myself not to download anything until i can get a hold of the album and hear it in its entirety. this, according to our resident arcade fire authority (shane) is the best way to hear it. : )

i also think that "neighborhood #3 (power out)" would be freaking AWESOME live. i'm a little surprised at just how much i like this music, popular and hyped as it may be. ;-)

Welcome to the Arcade Fire appreciation society... I see lostinyourinbox is in the top 50 most popular downloads on the hype machine. I missed out on tickets for the UK tour - gutted

yeah, i saw that on the hype machine, too. woo hoo! hope my bandwidth can withstand all the hits. ;-)

maybe you can snag a ticket outside the venue when they come to town? or win one on a radio station giveaway? do they even do that in london? i guess i should ask, do they even play arcade fire on the radio?

I'm one of the "not really bothered about them" people and the whole Neon Bible leak saga has just left me with a terminal case of indifference toward them.

I have Funeral too, but I only ever listen to the Neighborhoods, which are pretty damn good. Tunnels is just beautiful. Beyond that though, couldn't really care less about them I'm afraid.

i really can't explain why i'm so into them right now. their sound is so meaty, there's so much to absorb yet it's not all mushed together into one blob of sound. and the words, they get to me too. it seems that there are two camps here--the arcade fire fanatics and those who are not impressed by the hype! : )

all mp3s are for sampling purposes only. you like it? you buy it. you want me to take it down? let me know. and for the uninitiated, if you wish to listen to a song, click on the little blue arrows and they will stream. thanks, your host and music lover, mjrc.
