In the comments of this post, Agnes from it all started with carbon monoxide brought up a couple of points about remixes, including wondering why the remixer gets so much credit for basically retooling what the original artist did. I told her I thought that really good remixers were able to make songs very much their own, much like a band does when it does a really inventive cover.
It got me to thinking about my favorite remixes and why I like them and I told her I'd do a post on some of them. The ones I like most tend not to be dance-oriented, although there are certain bands or producers that do really fabulous dance remixes. Not surprisingly, however, I lean more toward the indie-rock camp.
Having said that, here is a remix of the Das Pop song "Fool for Love," which is a dance track.

Also on the more electronic end of the spectrum are these Goldfrapp remixes. I think these are what really got me into the whole remix scene.

On to the indie rock songs. Cassettes Won't Listen is perhaps my favorite remixer of all time, and these two tracks are classics.
Pela--"Lonesome Hearts (CWL Remix)" mp3
The Diggs--"Everyone's Starting Over (CWL Remix)" mp3
Owen Pallett, aka Final Fantasy, has a terrific remix of Grizzly Bear's "Don't Ask." I was obsessed with this song a couple of years ago.

This Gonzales remix of "Multiply" is better than the original, in my opinion. Just listen to that piano.
Jamie Lidell--"Multiply (Gonzales Remix)" mp3
To round things off, I love this mix of "Woman" by Avalanches and the Nick Zinner remix of "Gold Lion."
Wolf Mother--"Woman (Avalanches Remix)" mp3
Yeah Yeah Yeahs--"Gold Lion (Nick Zinner Remix)" mp3
I've shared almost all of these at some point, but they are ones I like to listen to time and again, so I think they're worth reposting.
Love that Avalanches remix of the Wolfmother song. Maybe it's Aussie bias
as a soon to be resident of the land Down Under.
Thanks for the shout out Marcy! I've faithfully downloaded each and every
remix you've posted and while I haven't had a chance to listen to them
properly yet, I'll report back to you soon as a complete convert I'm sure!
chris--it may be your aussie bias, but it is a killer version of the song,
so either way you win!
Nice Remix choices indeed! I am with you Marcy it is all about how well
they interpret it and progress the song into their own. :-) Remixes can go
either way but these are certainly some top picks
