Spirit If . . .

    It hit me all over again why I love Broken Social Scene: Kevin Drew.

    For that matter, Ohad Benchetrit, too. Drew's solo album Spirit If . . . , which came out Sept. 18th, has got Ohad all over it. He recorded it, helped produced it and played on almost every track. So I think between the two of them, this is as close to a BSS album as we're going to get. Actually, nearly every member of BSS appears on the album in some fashion. (Sidenote: Ohad is also a member of Do Make Say Think, and very possibly has got the best arms in the business, which you can sort of see here, but I digress.)

    And it's superb. It's extremely personal and intimate and musically it's immediately accessible. Lyrically it's a little (understatement) weird and not as direct, but there are enough moments of clarity that it speaks straight to the heart even if you don't exactly understand what he's singing about.

    Without going on and on about every single thing I love about it, I'll simply say it's definitely high on my top-ten list for the year.

    I do have one Ooops to point out from a previous post: The song "Backed Out on the . . . " is NOT "Backed Out on the Cause," like I had said, but "Backed Out on the Cocks," but nobody corrected me on it! Please, always feel free to do that. It's like if you ever saw me and I had a piece of food in my teeth or schmutz on my chin--I want to know these things!
