"Well . . . I got in a real . . . real bad headspace. I just got really depressed for a long time and couldn't do anything. I couldn't work at all. I missed having the desire to do any of that. I missed it making me feel good, making music. I think I cried for three years, probably. That's why it took so long. I just couldn't work, and I became a real recluse. I never left the house."He also talks about not wanting to make a pedestrian pop album and how he wanted to make an album that would stand the test of time. Now, I've said this before, but I guess I don't know what "pop music" means anymore, because there is nothing on this album that I would consider pop in the traditional sense. I mean, I can't imagine any of my friends who are into top-40 type music considering this pop music in the least. Regardless of labels and my inability to understand them, I think he's achieved his goal here, because this is one full-bodied and wonderful album that will keep me interested and listening repeatedly for a long time to come.
'It's Not So Hard' is my favorite track off the album, and is very much
Sparklehorse as I prefer to remember them. 'Knives of Summertime' is
another good one, in addition to the tracks you've already posted.
liz--"it's not so hard" makes me want to get up and dance around, no matter
what i'm doing. it's definitely my favorite. i like "don't take my
sunshine" and "some sweet day" too, for their beatleseque-ness. i need to
pick up some of their earlier stuff, i guess.
Scott worked on Emily Haine's solo album; I'll definitely check these guys
out. Thanks for the tracks, keep up the good work.
thanks for the info, roland. i've got "knives" but haven't really examined
the liner notes yet. i love when artists i like intersect like that. and
i'm glad you like the sparklehorse.
Hey, no problem. I've got some of her live stuff in my own
blog, if you're interested.
Somehow (!) I managed to NOT realise that Sparklehorse were playing in my
city just a few weeks ago (early October)... I am so ashamed. The new album
is superb - the miserable/sad songs in particular. But now I'm going off to
play 'Good Morning Spider', just one more time before bed...
waf--you know, it was really by accident that i even discovered them. i'd
read about them and then found their cd in the used bin, which i don't
think i would've bought at full price. i'm so glad i did buy it tho, they
are really wonderful. and not totally sad, not all the time . . . : )
