Aw, shit. This is some great stuff.
Pink Nasty's got it all: clever, meaningful lyrics; a warm, expressive voice; and some rollicking hook-filled guitar riffs.
How is it that I feel like I have so much in common with this young woman originally from Kansas?

I ask myself that repeatedly as I revel in her music. She's tough yet not afraid to expose her feelings, as she can kick it out as easily as she can be vulnerable, plus she has a sense of humor. It's a great combination.
Mold the Gold holds together quite nicely as an album, with several stand-outs. Album opener "I Don't Know" knowingly states, "You can ask me anything, coz I don't know." It moves right into "BTK Blues," which was my number one song of 2006, and from there it proceeds to unfold with ease and assurance. She's singing about disappointment, boredom and sometimes loneliness, yet even though a tune may be tinged with a bit of heartache, she never,
ever feels sorry for herself.
There's a definite Texas twang to some of the guitar work, but nothing that would put off someone who thinks even alt-country is too country (that would be me).
Bonnie "Prince" Billy (Will Oldham) joins her on three songs, including the last song, "Don't Ever Change," which is as odd and charming a love song as you'll ever hear.
Some of you might be wary of her name, but don't let it scare you. Her real name is Sara Beck and she lives in Texas now, so if you're anywhere near Austin, you could go see her.

Watch the video for
"Away Message" here. It's not an award-winning video, but the song kicks ass. Pink Nasty has a great bio on
myspace. You should definitely
read this interview with her at
cloak and dagger (click on features/select a songwriter/sara beck-pink nasty). And her brother is "hardcore sex rapper"
Black Nasty, and he wrote the album with her and produced it. Go figure.
