Ever since Merz called it quits (or simply went on a really long vacation, we don't know for sure), there's been a bit less attention paid to shoegaze music. I can't begin to fill the void he's left, but hopefully this band will help a little.

Panda Riot is from Chicago but plays frequently in Philadelphia and New York. Chances are you've heard one of these two songs by now, seeing as they've been all over the internets lately, but that's for good reason. They've got a classic dense and shimmering sound that envelops you with just the right amount of dream-pop sensibility. Their newest release, She Dares All Things, just came out last month. Check their myspace to hear a few more tracks. I also especially like "Olivia on the Downbeat."

I think Merz would approve, don't you?
WOW, I was hoping someone would post more panda riot! love them, I love
their song she dares all things (did not good ol' colin blog about this
before, but I have a new song to savor.
i'm happy to oblige! i believe you're right about colin--he wrote about
them a while ago. he's always ahead of the pack. ;-) and don't fret about
getting them confused with other bands--i was going to write about a band
called "the pandas" in this same post but i couldn't find a definitive
website for them, as there are several bands on myspace called "the
panadas." plus there are even more panda bands that aren't shoegazey, so
it's kind of like the "bear" bands or the "wolf" bands and easy to get them
mixed up. :)
. merz... i do miss him. he was one of my first blog 'buddies', someone so
tuned into my kind of music, our kind of music. he would totally love panda
riot, sure he is playing them wherever he is right now.x ps, yes, 'she
dares all things' was a 'song-of-the-moment' at one point at ABTFK. i raved
about it. and still do. a great track. looking forward to picking up the cd
- didn't know it was out so thanks M.x
i sure hope merz is doing ok. someone on the elbows forum said she found
him on some social-networking place called linkedin, but, as you know, his
blog has been completely silent since july. *sigh* on a lighter note, i
can't believe i was able to give you news about a band you turned me on to!
:)
