Oh John McCain, You Are So Transparent

posted Saturday, 30 August 2008

I guess I'm supposed to be cheering--John McCain picked a woman for his running mate. Woo Hoo! But all I feel is Ugh.

I'm all for a woman candidate, don't get me wrong, but is Sarah Palin really the very best, the most qualified person he could have picked for the job? Are you telling me there aren't 10, 20, even 30 better qualified, more experienced women in the Republican party that he could have picked instead?

They say (they being the political pundits, so take it with a grain of salt) that the choice for VP is the first "presidential" decision a candidate makes. Well, I'm not impressed.

Not only am I not impressed, I'm insulted. He's squandered a wonderful opportunity. Instead of choosing someone who's truly worthy of the position, he went with someone who will satisfy his conservative base (she's firmly anti-choice and wholly in favor of guns) in a pathetic attempt to attract the disgruntled Hillary voters out there who desperately want a woman in the White House.

Does he really think this is going to work?

Let me be upfront here--I am what you call a Yellow-Dog Democrat, which means I'd probably vote for a yellow dog rather than a Republican given the choice, so I'm quite a bit biased against McCain to begin with, but give me a break. This is so transparent that even a dog could see what he's doing!

I think he was going for the hottest choice. And also some of the more confused voters may think they are voting for the McCain/Tina Fey ticket.

'Ceptin' we know that tina fey is WAY TOO smart for McCain's ticket!

You are so right...this is very transparent. Palin's in the NRA, she's a young mom, and she's pretty (even if she has that weird pulled-up hairdo!) I'm not buying into it, even if I'm not a Biden fan at all!

I cannot imagine Sarah Palin running the country if McCain bites it. Biden, however, could probably pull it off.

From what I've read she is also very religious where McCain is not and they hope that will help him. But still, I agree that it is very transparent. I do not understand how anyone who supported Hillary and the policies she stands for could now vote for McCain simply because of this. But I don't understand how W got elected twice so what do I know?

nat--she was in the miss alaska pageant, did you know that? and ita about the hair. i almost feel sorry for her, though. it's a shame that she's going to be so far in above her head, because i'm sure she's a competent individual, just not the right one for the job at hand!

greer--she also has a son about to deploy for iraq--i suppose mccain thought she couldn't be more perfect on paper. and you're right about her being the complete opposite of everything hillary stands for. i never could understand why hillary supporters said they'd vote for mccain instead of obama. makes no sense.

if it makes anybody feel any better, my friends in the neighborhood, a couple of whom are republicans, were just as dismayed with his choice as we are, and in fact have said that it made up their minds for them NOT to vote for mccain. let's hope they're representative of the public at large. :)

Originally I thought it was really pretty clever. But the more time I have to think about it, this could end up to be a disaster for the G.O.P. Fingers crossed ;)

fingers crossed indeed! :)

wre--i've been trying unsuccessfully to reply to your comment just after this one, so i'm trying it this way. anway, i think you are so right. this is a better example of his impulsive decision-making style than any ad campaign could ever come up with. actions speak louder than words, for sure! and i just read on huffington post that they're putting down bets on if/when palin will be removed from the ticket. it just keeps getting better and better!

It was amazing to me, but I am often amazed (dismayed) by the Republican Party. There are student body presidents with more experience and better credentials than Palin, which is really laughable given all McCain's talk about Obama's "lack" of experience. The idea that this person (woman, man, it makes no difference) would be next in line to be the most powerful person on Earth after Mr. 4x facial skin cancer is appalling. The idea that this would persuade a disaffected Hillary supporter is equally inane. To me, this shows how McCain really, truly, does not understand the world around him.

And so, here's a big fat THANK YOU to John McCain, for painting a clearer picture than any ad campaign ever could! :)
