Matmos
OK, their site is called "brainwashed." This is definitely some weird-ass shit.
Here's an excerpt from their bio: "
In their recordings and live performances over the last nine years, Matmos have used the sounds of: amplified crayfish nerve tissue, the pages of bibles turning, a bowed five string banjo, slowed down whistles and kisses, water hitting copper plates, the runout groove of a vinyl record, a $5.00 electric guitar, liposuction surgery . . . " and the list goes on.
It's not sing-along material, just so you know. But there's something intriguing and absorbing about the rhythmic chirps and whirs and dance-beat underpinnings. I prefer the newest cut, "Roses & Teeth for Ludwig Wittgenstein" to the other two songs listed below. "The Struggle Against Unreality Begins" goes on a bit too long for my taste. That's actually a criticism I have about a lot of songs. Unless it's building or morphing or otherwise working toward some end, I'm not fond of repetition for repetition's sake.
That said, sometimes you simply stumble into the strangest stuff and find it compelling anyway. Sometimes I wonder, how do they come up with this? What inspires them? I am continuously astounded at the variety and depth of the creative process.
Matmos--"Roses & Teeth for Ludwig Wittgenstein" off The Rose Has Teeth In the Mouth of A Beast, coming out May 9th
Matmos--"The Struggle Against Unreality Begins" off The Civil War
Matmos--"Lipostudio .... and so on" off A Chance to Cut Is a Chance to Cure (you think this is the one where they sample liposuction surgery??)
