Marching Band Season Is Upon Us

posted Thursday, 6 September 2007

My son plays the tuba--sousaphone, actually--in the marching band. Isn't that cool? I'm so proud of him. Plus it gives me an excuse to post this song because he, too, used to play the euphonium.

I love to point out bands to him that have tubas in them, like The Born Again Floozies and Devotchka, and Tapes 'n Tapes, which has a euphonium.

The Born Again Floozies--"I Used to Play the Euphonium" mp3 off Paste Magazine Sampler #27 This band has two tap dancers, a tuba, guitar, and a trombone. They're verging on the edge of being a novelty act, except this song is better than that implies.

I get very emotional when I watch the marching band on the field or in a parade. I think it's something to do with the drums. Those cadences touch a very deep, primal place and make me feel all stirred up and overwhelmed. I almost always have to fight back tears.

p.s. That's not him in the photo, that's some guy from Ohio State University. But it could be him some day.

Ahem. Having attended that particular university (though I left without a diploma), I can tell you that is not just SOME GUY. That guy is dotting the "I" in the famed script Ohio formation and he has earned the honor! GO BUCKS! ;)

And yes, that's cool about your kiddo! Keep on playin' that music!!!

oh my, i meant no disrespect! i knew that from where i scarfed the photo, only i didn't realize i should have mentioned it--my most sincere apologies! : ) i am an ohio university alum, btw, and our marching band was amazing, as well. i really hope my son decides to stick with it long enough to do it at college. i think it would be an incredible experience for him.

LOL. No offense taken! You went to OU? Are you from OH? (I lived there for a few years as a child, between living in Indiana and living in PA.) We moved a lot!!

Tubas are the comedians of the brass section. 95 % of the time they sit in the back and honk out a simple bass line or off beats. But that 5 % of the time, they get to play it up in a way that no other instrument ever can. Makes the trumpets jealous, despite all their solos.
