Shirley Manson and Paul Buchanan--Heaven on Earth?

posted Friday, 2 February 2007
I was just listening to some Garbage and it made me realize how very much I love Shirley Manson's voice. She's got quite a range, from very low and throaty to a clear, really pretty upper register, although she doesn't seem to use that as often.
I decided to look her up on the internets to see if she's got anything in the works. You probably know that Garbage has been on an indefinite hiatus, whatever that means. Turns out she is working on a solo album, with none other than Paul Buchanan, fellow Scotsman and member of the extraordinary The Blue Nile (which also seem to be on a lengthy hiatus of sorts, from recording anyway).
So what can we expect? According to this article in The Sunday Mail (from back in Oct.), she was heading into the studio in December '06 to start recording. In addition to Paul Buchanan's writing and working with her, she's also asked Jack White and Billy Corgan to contribute. This ought to be a killer album, don't you think? All that angst in one room? Ooooh, baby, I can't wait. In the meantime, Garbage is set to release a greatest hits compilation, Absolute Garbage, in March.
Garbage--"You Look So Fine" mp3 off Version 2.0 (buy)
Garbage--"Sex Is Not the Enemy" mp3 off Bleed Like Me (buy)
Garbage--"Medication (Acoustic)"  mp3
The Blue Nile--"The Downtown Lights" mp3 off Hats (buy)
Here's an interview with Shirley from the Jan. 25th edition of the Scotsman.com that talks about the recent honor bestowed on her by her home city, Edinburgh, and other personal info, including a picture of her with her proud parents the night of the award ceremony.

Love that acoustic Garbage! The Blue Nile alas, there was a tour I worked on where the sound man played that over and over every single day and I think my head might explode if I heard it one more time.

I did visual production (film, video, and slides) and projection for Laurie Anderson for many years. It was a very fun time--she was a great boss and I got to travel all over the world. It was a great group of people to tour with too, even Robin, the sound engineer. (And just as a future note, no "White Wedding" either please.)

Oh, I had forgotten how good Garbage was. I miss the 90's, you know. Great music, Bill Clinton, paying of the national debt, no religious zealots in the White House, all that good stuff. Such a good sound. I wonder if Bartcop is still in love with Shirley Manson... who's not, really?

good garbage--sounds like an oxymoron. i don't remember being all that enthralled with the 90s as they were happening, but compared to now they seem like the good old days. ;-)

I was lucky to be living in the 5-college region of Massachusetts at the time. Smith, Amherst, Mt. Holyoke, Hampshire, and UMass Amherst. There was a ton of good music on the air and in the clubs. Imagine my shock when I moved to BEL AIR, MARYLAND. Frontal lobotomy. Garbage was pretty popular, and my proclivity for bands with angry women singers was in full swing at that point. Poe was another good one. Cheers!

oh, man, we were just there this summer. i can only imagine what the music scene must be like, even today. hey, are you singing the carmina? i'm missing next week's rehearsal to see a show (don't tell p, i'm going to pretend like i'm sick. ha!)

It was great, and I still miss it. I saw all kinds of bands, but also Diana Krall, Fred Eaglesmith, Martin Sexton, and the Holly Cole Trio (best show I've ever seen) all close enough to see them sweat.

I can't do the Carmina, alas. Turns out I have a work conflict for both DSO rehearsals. No option. I'll be back after that. I'm hoping to catch the Saturday performance, though. And, your secret is safe with me!
