I like to listen to the contrast podcast while I ride my bike. It really makes the time fly by, although it's a little hard to ride uphill when I'm laughing. Anyway, what with the theme being "bicycles" this week (which you can listen to here), you'd think I would have had no trouble choosing a song to submit.
Well, of course I did have trouble, mainly because I didn't pick a track from Bombay Bicycle Club, which was my first inclination. I didn't do that because I was introduced to BBC by Ross, who suggested this week's theme. I (wrongly, as it turns out) predicted he would pick a song by them, so I felt like I shouldn't as well.
I went on a quest, then, for new bicycle songs and I actually found several I really like. A couple of them come from a fantastic playlist over at TSURURADIO (why I haven't ever read his blog before, I don't know, but I really should--it's funny and full of energy and he's got great taste in music).
The song I ended up with is by Helvetia, a band from the Pacific Northwest, and it's off their 2008 album The Acrobats. I liked it so much that I ordered the album. Their new release, Helvetia's Junk Shop, comes out Sept. 15th and I may have to get that one, too. This song reminds me a bit of "Free Salute" by Little Barrie, especially the free-roaming bassline and syncopated drums. I love the lo-fi sound.

I almost picked this tune from Memory Tapes, but in the end the Helvetia won out. They're actually very different types of music, this being more electronic and dancey. I toyed with the idea of submitting a second song under a pseudonymn and a fake voice, but I spared you all the indignity of that spectacle (you can thank me later!).

ha! the fake voice/pseudonym thing is such a good idea, you totally have
to do it next time you're stuck between two. I think you might also need a
fake email address to throw Tim of the track :).
lol! i just might do it sometime. the fake email address sounds like a lot
of work, but i guess i could manage it somehow!
LOL. I thought of the fake voice thing awhile back, but I didn't think I'd
fool anyone, so I ditched the idea. I'm enjoying the fact that you
considered it, too!
