Leap Year on a Friday--Woot?

posted Thursday, 28 February 2008

I don't normally care much about such things as leap year, but since it's here and it's on a Friday, I got to wondering whether it would mean anything different to me this year.

    Wonder, wonder, wonder . . .

OK, so it doesn't, except that maybe you could see today as a kind of gift, a day on which you can take a chance and throw your heart out there to the cosmos, metaphorically speaking, and then sit back and see if anything happens as a result.

Sounds like a good idea, right? The thing is, I'm kind of on uneasy terms with the cosmos these days. I can't decide if it's giving me a break or sending me one giant "fuck you." I'm really unclear as to whether I'm getting a gift or it's one big joke.

I think I'm in this frame of mind from reading the book Foreskin's Lament by Shalom Auslander. It's the memoir of a guy who grew up as an Orthodox Jew and how everything he ever learned about the nature of God warped him (in a bad way) and made him into the person he is today, which is a catastrophic worrier and non-practicing Jew, among various other dysfunctional things. It's excruciatingly honest and funny, with an extremely irreverent tone that belies the seriousness of what he's going through. I highly recommend it.

So what kind of music do you put with that?

The Tiny--"They Say It's Weird" mp3 off Starring: Someone Like You (buy)

Man Man--"Skin Tension" mp3 off Six Demon Bag (buy

The B-52's--"Cosmic Thing" mp3 off Cosmic Thing (buy)

George Sarah--"Lament" mp3 off (unreleased)

This is kind of cool. I went through my music library and picked these songs, then I looked up the bands to put in the appropriate links, etc., and it turns out The Tiny, Man Man and The B-52's are each coming out with a new album this Spring. That's serendipity for you. Maybe the cosmos doesn't hate me after all.

Ditto to what FiL said. Like the Cosmos can even HEAR us when we tell it to bugger off. :)
