"Two sips from the cup of human kindness and I'm shit-faced. Just laid to waste."
That about sums it up these days. I can't tell you all how much your support and kindness means to me. I've gotten notes, songs, reading suggestions, spiritual guidance and many, many sincere wishes for my well-being. I just wanted to say thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for everything.
There's always been talk about the faceless, anonymous aspect of the internet that is supposed to be dehumanizing and isolating, and I suppose in some cases that's true, but not in mine, not from you all. You've made me feel like I matter, like what I have to say makes a difference, and for that I will always be grateful.
Here's a pretty deep philosophical question for you: How do you know when you are loved? Which naturally leads to some music.
The New Pornographers--"Use It" mp3 off Twin Cinema (buy).
John Lennon--"Oh My Love" mp3 off Imagine (buy) (although mine is off Music From Gilmore Girls)
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan with Eddie Vedder--"Face of Love" mp3 off Dead Man Walking Soundtrack (buy)
k.d. lang--"Love Is Everything" mp3 off Hymns of the 49th Parallel (buy) I love this cover of Jane Siberry's tune even better than the original. This is a sad one, though, don't say I didn't warn you.
Carly Simon--"When You Close Your Eyes" mp3 off No Secrets (buy) This is here purely for sentimental reasons.
**UPDATE** Fraser over at bklyn song of the day had another version of "Love Is Everything" up yesterday. And like I told him, I swear I wrote my post before I read his. We're just on the same wave length or something.
Lovely selection of tracks there :) I always struggle with how personal to
make my blog, and end up switching from lots of banal details to almost no
mention of myself. One of the things I like about your blog apart from the
music is the fact that there is a personality in the words.
rachel--right back at you, sister. i feel so fortunate to have met you and
the rest of the gang. i get all squishy inside thinking about how we're all
connected through the music and all that it means to each one of us. re:
carly simon, she's one of my earliest influences. in fact, when i go back
and listen to this album, i see how it shaped me in so many ways.
I think the question "how do you know when you are loved?" is a very
personal one that differs from person to person.
I kept trying to figure out a good way to express some solidarity with you,
and to wish you a good way back to happiness, but I couldn't come up with a
good one. Except to say: You are a writer. I still remember your post on
munck//johnson.
Also, I feel loved when I wake up and my girlfriend has
brought me breakfast. Or when she agrees to marry me. These are good bits.
mentok--you crack me up. seriously, though, do you mean the question is
personal as opposed to philosophical, or just that it's personal in the
sense of being particular to an individual? and kids? yeah, they're the
best. especially when they're still young. then they become teenagers and
disappear into the wilderness for a while. for example, my daughter
recently told me i'm one of those weird blogger types. i could just feel
the love! ;-)
Only 40 feet in total? Dang, I should've read the design spec more
closely, O Divine Mentok. We've just finished your tootsies to a height of
4O feet. So do we continue to that scale, or are you comfortable with your
effigy
Argh! Blog City loves me not... Final sentence, first paragraph should
have read:
shane--i love that: solidarity. i accept the solidarity you offer. and that
is the sweetest thing i've heard in a long time, that about your girlfriend
bringing you breakfast and saying yes to marrying you. those are good bits
indeed. : )
fil--i apologize profusely for the errant spiteful actions of blog-city as
this is not the first time it's done you wrong. if only it were as
welcoming and loving as your dog. ;-) oh, and i have no idea what homunculi
is (are?).
One homunculus, two homunculi. Here, check this out, it pretty much tells
the story:
Homunculus = Latin for "little man." Sorry, I'm feeling like quite the
geek right now...
that is one cool website, and the morphing man is absolutely the coolest
thing ever. i believe i shall bookmark that for future reference!
This is such a nice group that has formed! And we have been thinking
alike--I remember that with Tegan & Sara about a month ago.
