The contrast podcast is all about "My Job" this week. It's a theme that could be taken in all kinds of directions and I'm looking forward to hearing what everyone has to say about what they do. Go here to listen to or download it yourself. Next week begins the three-part "Festive Fifty" countdown, so be sure to check in and see what turns out to be the number one song, as chosen by listeners and contributors.
My job. What can I say? It's no secret that I love my job. It was instrumental in saving my sanity. I was still pretty depressed when I started it about a year and half ago, but working there and being a part of something bigger than myself has been incredibly good for my mental health.
The most important thing is that being there gets me out of my head. My mind can be a quagmire, sometimes even a dangerous place, so the less time I spend dwelling on myself and my issues, the better. When I'm at work, for the entire time I'm there, I can forget myself, and that's the biggest gift it's given me. I will always be grateful for that.

There's lots of other benefits that come with it, too. For instance, I get to make mix-tapes and play them all day long. I get to nurture my caffeine addiction. Plus I work with my two best friends--you can't beat that. It's all women, as a matter of fact, and everyone I work with is wonderful, especially my boss. She is one of the most amazing, kind, and generous people I've ever met and I feel privileged just to be a part of her organization. I work at a really special place.
Awwww I wanna play mixtapes at my work! We play a bit of music in the
classroom to get the kids to be quiet sometimes, but over the last couple
of weeks it's been nothing but Christmas carols and the latest 'So Fresh'
CD. What I wouldn't give to play a bit of Okkervil River, Sigur Ros or
Frightened Rabbit!
Great track in its own right, mjrc! Unfortunately, I find that my
productivity is inversely related to the amount of time I spend listening
to my mp3 player - that should tell me something about my relative
interests!
agnes--i bet sigur ros would be ok--the kids wouldn't be able to understand
the words and it might just calm them down. ;-)
I like to wear my headphones while I'm doing things too, although I could
not wear them when I was working because my job entailed too much phone
interaction. And it doesn't work for me if I'm doing something I have to
focus on.
It really is good to forget yourself a bit every day. It really is what
keeps ME sane, anyway.
