I had a thought after reading someone's comment on my favorite-songs post. He said that he was unfamiliar with a lot of the songs on my list, which surprised me somewhat. I tend to think of my musical choices as being so informed by others' opinions that they are hardly my own, and consequently they must be fairly common ones.
So my big thought was that it really does take a collective ear to listen to all the music out there. And not only the new stuff, but the existing stuff as well. Here's just one example of what could easily be hundreds: I'd heard of Norwegian Sondre Lerche before, even had one or two of his songs in my library, but until I heard "Phantom Punch" on Juan's blog (and associated it with the funny story he tells in conjunction with it), I'd not really paid Lerche much attention. Well, Phantom Punch is a great song, as is "Airport Taxi Reception." So good in fact that I had to go find the album. Thankfully Juan's ears had done some listening for me, otherwise I'm almost certain it would have passed me by unheard.
I know this isn't any huge revelation, more like confirmation of what we all already know, but I thought I'd voice it because it hit me so strongly. So thanks to everyone who's ever listened to something and felt compelled to share it. You may never know when it's going to connect for someone, but chances are it will and that person will be as grateful for it as I am.

well all righty, then! speaking of ears, what do you make of obama's win?
m...no way Hillary can win since the mighty Oprah put her money on Obama.
As much as women want to have a woman to root for, women seem to think
Oprah can do no wrong. I know I'm generalizing like crazy, so forgive
that. I just don't think Clinton can overcome that and her own Washington
past.
Well, I can't say that I have paid a whole lot of attention since, due to
our screwed up primary system, my vote in the primaries doesn't mean squat.
But being uninformed has never stopped me from having an opinion! (Does
that make me a closet Republican?) A) the Oprah endorsement surely must
help, and B) he's not Hillary. Although Hillary is surely the best
qualified, she's a polarizing and generally unlikeable person - which IMHO
means she won't win the finicky moderate vote. So, I'm surprised, but not
shocked, and I think this bodes well.
nat and wre--i'm really psyched that obama won. as much as i would love to
have a woman president, i just don't think hilary's the one. too much
baggage and not enough genuineness. yep, i'm going on my gut here, coz
frankly i think any of the dems would do an outstanding job. as has been
demonstrated by the current administration, it's not necessarily about
experience but about leadership. oh my god i sound like a campaign ad! but
it's true. i think romney's on his way down the tubes. i wouldn't mind
seeing mccain and huckabee fight it out. thompson is worthless. ron paul's
an interesting fellow, tho. crazy, but interesting. i'm a bit of a
political junkie, so i love this time of year. :)
If it weren't for music blogs I'd miss out on tons of music.
As it is I can only listen to so much but the blogs are better than a
magazine due to the people.
