I'm so excited about this. Last week I got an email alerting me that Tegan and Sara will be playing a free-at-noon concert at WXPN's World Cafe Live this Friday. I RSVP'd in the affirmative as soon as I received it, of course, and thought, god bless XPN!
Then, out of nowhere, I got an email from a kind soul who wanted me to listen to this band, Eugene Francis Jnr. They're from Cardiff, England and, as it turns out, will be supporting Tegan and Sara at several UK shows (Eugene Francis solo, that is, not the band). How serendipitous is that?
And how lovely is this music? Quite lovely, in fact. How could it not be, when they list their influences as "planet earth-womankind." They won me over immediately with that. Well, that and their luscious blend of dreamy melodies and images of kites flying and things falling from heaven. Here are some lyrics I like:
"My sister once told me, as the world unwound before me, I would find my wings but the price was broken bones / And that day I fell from heaven, well my soul it needed mending, she tied my shoes and she helped me to my feet / And she held me to the sun and she let it shine, when my past became my present state of mind."
You see what I mean?
Eugene Francis Jnr--"Kites" mp3 off B-Side to Poor Me 7" Single (buy--this is their myspace, but you can also find it on U.S. iTunes)
Here's the video for "Poor Me." I'm told they're working on an album which should be ready early 2008. Something to look forward to.
Poor Me is a damn fine song!
So, you're going to see David Dye and Tegan And Sara while I'm walking in
the heat! Think of me and drink in the music for me!!
What a wonderful sound... really quite beautiful (and entirely new to me)
nat--i'll give david your best. ha! he's been around a looooooong time,
hasn't he? he's great for the city of philadelphia's music scene, that's
for sure. good luck this weekend. hope the weather holds out.
And here I thought I was the only one who was contacted to post this stuff.
:) I'm loving "Poor Me."
aw, we still think you're special, andy, even if you are just one of a
thousand bloggers . . . ;-)
LOL. Marcy's special, too! How come the only bands who contact me are,
like, bad surf-punk acts?
