I'm having trouble moving on to new music as I'm still processing 2008. I suspect this is a metaphor for my life, but for the moment I'm just going to examine it at face value.
I've been thinking about how my top-ten list didn't include any female artists. Mates of State is a male/female duo, this is true, but none of the others are fronted by women or were solo women artists. I know this shouldn't bother me just for that reason alone, and it doesn't, but I did start wondering, Where were all the ladies and why wasn't I listening to them?
Well, turns out there were some: Jenny Lewis, Lykke Li, Ani DiFranco, My Brightest Diamond, M.I.A., Ida Marie, and Santogold all put albums this year but I didn't pick up any of them.
There are good reasons for a couple. Jenny Lewis, for instance, leaves me cold. I mean, she has a pretty voice but it's unremarkable, and I don't think her songwriting is strong enough to make up for it. Oh, who am I kidding, I actively dislike her, although I'm not sure it's her fault. I pretty much avoid any artist that's being pushed upon me by the publicity machine and jaysus, was she ever being crammed down our collective throats. She tries too hard, too, when she sings. That over-the-top crack/edge in her voice when she's "emoting" really bugs me. But enough about her.
I tried to like Lykke Li, but there's something a little too juvenile about her sound for me. I find that in a lot of female vocalists. Guys don't sing like they're little boys but women seem to embrace that girly-girl vocal styling and it doesn't do a thing for me. So much for her.
Santogold is just not really my type of music. Ani DiFranco has been around for ages and I've never really listened to her, so I didn't give her much a chance this year, either. I forgot about Aimee Mann, I should have given her more of a chance, too. And School of Seven Bells. I liked a couple of their songs but never bought the record.
I feel a little bad for not picking up My Brightest Diamond's A Thousand Shark's Teeth. I may still do that, although I haven't seen her album on practically any year-end lists, which doesn't necessarily mean anything, but given how crazy we all went for her two years ago, I'm kind of surprised that she didn't make more of an impact this year.
Wow, I'm really rambling. Sorry. And I know there are loads more but if I don't stop now I never will. Plus I still haven't figured out my initial question: Where were all the ladies and why wasn't I listening to them? Oh, fuck it, I know the answer. It's coz I'm a bitch, isn't it? It's not them, it's me!
Big Sir--"'Cause That Shit's Just Too Evil (And She's Just a Gangsta Bitch)" mp3 off Und Die Scheibe Andert Sich Immer (buy)
that's a diagram of your "mental access window" in case you're wondering.
I'm the same and was actually thinking about this the other day. Much of
what I like at the moment seems to come from bands rather than solo
artists. Whenever a solo act gains my attention it's usually a guy rather
than a girl. I'm with you, most female singers just don't do it for me. I
just find them boring and if I do like what I hear initially, their music
usually fails to stay with me.
I actively disliked Jenny L until this Acid Tongue album. Yeah, her voice
really is pretty unremarkable, but her band jams, especially on here, and
several songs grabbed me. I know you don't care much for Lucinda Williams,
either, so you probably won't like Acid Tongue, as it's kind of
countrified. (not blatantly, though) I still don't like Rilo Kiley,
though. Tried the Lykke Li, too, and didn't get into it.
I did like Aimee Mann's very much (I usually do like her stuff.)
Yeah... I am with you on so many levels of this post. Damn do I hate Jenny
Lewis, she annoys the shit out of me, I can't stand her music.
The Submarines released a wonderful album this year, though I guess like
Mates of State that's a duo. Still, she sings lead on most songs. I have
never been able to get into Ani DiFranco, no matter how hard I try. I have
a similar problem with Tori Amos. It's all just unlistenable, to me.
well i'm glad i'm not the only one! although i suppose i'm preaching to the
choir, aren't i?
I'm in the same boat as everyone else here :). I love Aimee Mann's voice
and her lyrics so much, but I am dying for her to crank it up again like in
her 'I'm With Stupid' days. She's gotten way too mellow for me, though I
probably didn't give this last one as much of a chance as I should have.
I didn't like Jenny Lewis' latest. But M.I.A. is fantastic. "Kala" came out
in '07 in Britain and made my top 10. You're right, though, there aren't a
ton of great female solo artists about right now.
Oh no! You've missed out on The Duke Spirit (led by the marvelous Lelia
Moss), "Neptune" and the winsome Samantha Crain (who I was lucky to see
live, she's got an interesting and gorgeous voice) "The Confiscation". Joan
Osborne also released "Little Wild One" which has a few really good tracks
on it. And Amy Ray released "Didn't It Feel Kinder" which was a beautiful
album if totally typically Amy. 2009 is looking good for Heartless
Bastards, "The Mountain" and an anticipated album by Garbage. But yeah,
most of my top 15 were male dominated bands/artists, such is the business I
fear.
greer--yes, that's exactly what i wish aimee mann would do, too, i like her
when she sings with a little more gusto!
Strong female artists with song-writing chops in 2008? Who Killed Amanda
Palmer?

smittner--i forgot about amanda palmer! thanks for the reminder.
Oh you've got to give Ani a real chance! The new record was only so-so,
but I strongly encourage you check out her Daytrotter session. I think Ani
sounds much better when she's not cooped up in the studio. But go back to
her earlier stuff and give it a try. Ani DiFranco is an amazing album. So
is Little Plastic Castle or Out of Range.
