If Someone Don't Help Me Soon I Believe I'm Gonna Lose My Mind . . .

posted Tuesday, 15 January 2008

The contrast podcast went up in smoke this week. Oh, fear not, it didn't disappear, it's just that the theme was "smoking," suggested by yours truly. I thought of "smoking" right after the "martini" episode. Smoking and drinking go together in my mind, for whatever reason. You can listen to it or download it here.

Speaking of smoking, Sarah Vaughan was one smokin' singer. I have three vocal idols from the period of the 1940s through 1950s, and they are Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan. Of the three, I always imagined myself to sound most like Sarah. Oh yes, I had delusions of grandeur, that's for sure. But I love her voice, her deep, dark lower register and her smooth upper range. I used to try to imitate her every inflection.

And this song is so wonderful! It's funny as hell, if you listen to the words. Click here to read the lyrics if you can't understand them. This is ripped from the original vinyl, so it's a little scratchy and the sound is a tad muffled, but it doesn't hide the fact that she could sing the smoke out of a cigarette.

Sarah Vaughan--"No Smokes Blues" mp3 off Sarah Swings (buy--I can't find this particular album to buy, but this song appears on The Quintessence New York: 1944-1948 (Live))

Next week's theme is "My brush with fame." Oooh, now that's going to be interesting . . . .

Great, great pick here with Sarah! What a smokin' voice she had. I have yet to attempt to rip vinyl to mp3, since that would mean dragging my turntable out of the basement and trying to figure out how to hook it up, etc.

And I can't wait to hear about your brush with fame. Mine's kind of boring. LOL.

thank you, nat! you are always so supportive. i really appreciate that. :) btw, i should have given my husband credit for ripping the vinyl. he's the computer guy in our house, i'm just a user. ;-) as for my brush with fame, i'm still trying to think of something appropriate--or even relevant. i don't know that i've had one, actually!

Smoking and drinking go together so well!!! And man I quit smoking like 4 months ago but lately I have been craving I nice drinking and smoking session. Of course I always say that and then I actually do go out for a night and I regret it later.

mjrc, your timing (and Tim's) couldn't have been any better. While I was in Russia, I couldn't stop thinking about that coincidence because EVERYONE in Russia, it seems, smokes. I'll have to write a post on this. Even in the doctor's offices, they smoke in the hallways. We stayed in a "Smoking", as opposed to "Non-smoking" room the last night we were in St. Petersburg, and it actually smelled less of smoke than most of the non-smoking rooms we had! Congrats on the theme selection, and on a killer selection too!

P.S. Had a pint of Guinness on Saturday in with Tim, too. Great fun!

all mp3s are for sampling purposes only. you like it? you buy it. you want me to take it down? let me know. and for the uninitiated, if you wish to listen to a song, click on the little blue arrows and they will stream. thanks, your host and music lover, mjrc.
