The Ice Storm Cometh

posted Thursday, 15 February 2007
I should be doing so many other productive things today*, yet I sit and cruise the internets instead. I'm not at work because the world is shut down due to the massive ice storm moving through the area. North of us they're getting lots of snow but we got a combination couple inches of snow with a thick layer of ice on top. The roads are so slick that my husband couldn't even get out of the neighborhood this morning, and he's a hardcore "I'm going to work today no matter what" kind of guy, so you know it's bad out there.
Why don't I tell you a little bit about the Lily Allen show? It was fun, fun, fun. She's so cute. It was sold out and the crowd was really excited. Everybody sang along and waved their arms and danced about. It was great. She's improved her showmanship and seemed to be enjoying herself as well, talking to us and joking and appearing very relaxed.
You know how she usually wears a fairly dressy outfit, with her hair all done up and looking kind of 60s glam and all? Well, her regular wardrobe must've gotten waylaid somewhere, coz she was wearing what I can only describe as a housecoat--you know, the kind of cotton dress that buttons down the front that your mother or grandmother would wear over her regular clothes while she cleaned the house? Yeah, that. Also known as a duster (not a bathrobe). She wore it over baggy grey sweat pants. Not the most attractive ensemble, although it certainly didn't matter, I just thought it was odd.
She played all her hits and then some, including "Cheryl Tweedy," and two covers that she sang exceptionally well: "Everybody's Changing" by Keane and "Naive" by the Kooks. Her band was pretty good, the keyboard player was especially invigorated and into it. It was apparent that they were having a good time. I love it when you can see them exchange looks and laughs during a song.
We were pretty close to the front, so we had a great view. However, I did have to defend my turf from one particularly pushy young woman. I almost got into a fight with her--don't laugh, it's true! She came barrelling in from out of nowhere and crammed herself right in front of me. When I said, excuse me, but you're not going to fit there, she got all "I was here the whole time." And I was like, No freaking way, honey, I've been here for 45 minutes and now you are standing directly in front of my husband--where I was until you pushed me out of the way! I called her rude and she continued to try to defend herself. She finally moved a bit to the right and I could breathe and see again, but it was tense for a few minutes there. She was taller than me (which is why she totally blocked my view) but I think I coulda taken her if it came to that. Yeah, right!

Lastly, I've almost totally lost my voice since seeing this show. I had a cold going in, and what with all the singing, shouting and noisemaking, it's now a froggy shadow of its former self. I hope it comes back in time to record my intro for the next contrast podcast!

i am sure it was not so much fun to you having this little conversation with that young lady than reading about it like i do. you made me kinda smile after a ******* awful long day. thx. i read about the weather round ya.... we had a summer-ish day today ( day today todayday. hmmm :-s) to be honest, mister-repair-the-airconditioner came just on time to repair these nice machines. (... 50 degrees in the server room ? alrightie, i guess thats normal if a serverroom isnt cooled. well.)

and i wanted to buy new shoes ( yesterday it rained like in the noahs-ark-story - and i had to walk to a costumer. WALK. me! mister- i only go by train. boss : oh well, you cannot drive. nobody has time to drive ya. seems like you gotta go these 3 kilometers on your own, honey. - well thank you. duh)buuut.... they had no nice ones so i went to the bookstore and spent too much for books i probably could have read in internet ;)

frustraded-shopping ? ( yes, men also do this... at least sometimes :) )

pik, you sound like you had one hell of a rotten day. : ( rain, and walking, and no nice shoes . . . at least you got some books. i'd much rather read a real book than stare at the screen for so long. blogs and other short stuff is fine, but i like to take a book and get really comfortable, and you just can't do that in front of the computer, you know? : )

i've been reading about the total lack of snow around your parts. very odd, this weather. :0

and as always i carry about 6 books with me ( in my fancy ikea-bag. hahaha :D) oh how i'd like to conversation now.

Lily seems to dress down when she doesn't play LA or NYC. Both times in Chicago she kind of dressed down. I guess this is because more photos from those performances will be in magazines and websites?

bob--hmm, you might be on to something there. i took some pictures but they're on someone else's camera and she hasn't sent them to me yet. hopefully i'll get them soon and be able to put them up.

i don't know why i even made an issue of it, you know? i mean, most indie rock bands don't ever dress up in any way whatsoever. i just thought she would, mainly because of all the pictures i'd seen of her!

all mp3s are for sampling purposes only. you like it? you buy it. you want me to take it down? let me know. and for the uninitiated, if you wish to listen to a song, click on the little blue arrows and they will stream. thanks, your host and music lover, mjrc.
