I Want It To Be Over

posted Sunday, 2 November 2008

I can't take it anymore, people. I am about out of my skin with anxiety and fear and hope and dread. I've got to make it through 48 more hours and I'm not sure I can do it.

I'm talking about the election, of course. I'm working all day Tuesday transporting voters to the polls (I live near a university and will be taking students to and fro) so at least I'll be busy most of the day, but once the polls close and all I can do is wait, I will probably explode from nerves. Patience, as you recall, is not my strong suit!

Part of me is fairly optimistic. I really think Obama can and will win this thing. But the other part is jaded and cynical and thinks the worst will happen and then we'll be subject to four more years of bullshit, ineptitude and fear mongering (and that's putting it mildly).

I realize I'm not alone in my feelings of angst and trepidation. You're probably feeling it, too, and Larry David wrote about how he's feeling in this piece for the Huffington Post.

Yep, we're all in this together, so instead of asking for you to wish me luck, I'm going to wish you luck and pray that it all turns out the way we want--nay, need--it to turn out.

Goldfrapp--"It's Not Over Yet (Klaxons Cover)" mp3 off Live Lounge 08.02.08 (I've been informed this is originally a Grace tune--thanks Neil.)

Tegan and Sara--"I Can't Take It" mp3 off So Jealous (buy)

"And it also strengthens my faith because I know at the end of the day putting this in God's hands, the right thing for America will be done, at the end of the day on Nov. 4."  -- Gov. Sarah Palin, in a radio interview with James Dobson.

So can anybody tell me who God will answer in the affirmative at the end of the day, assuming she and I are praying to the same god for opposite results?

Please, God, let it be me!!

Good Luck from Blighty.

I can only imagine how nervous you must be. Its an unbearable wait here and Im only indirectly affected by the result (100's of thousands dieing in illegal wars, big oil and business, ecoissues etc). The final days are dragging and the expectation of McCain sneaking in increasing. If I had to bet I'd say McCain, but its people like you getting those votes out that might just make a difference this time... please let it be so for everyones sake.

oh before I forget "Its Not Over Yet" was originally by Grace - The Klaxons love old dance tracks http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=oBUT0cxtHlg

Hi Marcy...personally I don't think there's much to worry about. There's so much optimism surrounding Obama's campaign I think he's pretty much a lock to win. Although I don't feel he's going to be the answer to everything everyone seems to think he is, I do appreciate how energized people seem to be by his campaign. I'm only concerned by his untested nature, but if the man can respond under extreme pressure to any cirumstance better than we've come accustomed to, I'm sure the country will support him fully. We'll see!

I am so ready for it to be over. Trouble is, in about 2 years, it'll all start up again with people guessing who's going to be running, etc.

Hats off to you for the work you'll do on Tuesday.

thanks, blighty! if the election were being held in europe, obama would be guaranteed a landslide! i'm feeling a bit more optimistic since i wrote this. i just spent the afternoon going door-to-door to get out the vote--and there were at least 40 or more people doing the same thing right here in my local area. if that's being replayed at obama campaign offices around the country, then i think we're going to see a great turnout, which should mean good things for obama. and thank you so much for the info about the song! and for the video!! : )

chris--you're in florida--is the mood pretty positive down there? also, you touch on something that i've been meaning to write about, maybe i will after tuesday. and that is, we need to get obama off the pedestal he's on and be realistic about expectations. i know he's not the savior of the world and that things won't be easy, but we need to say that out loud a few times to make it sink in.

nat--you are so right! i do hope we get to enjoy a bit of a honeymoon period after the election before thoughts turn to re-election, but i don't suppose it will be very long! i'm very excited about volunteering on tuesday. my only concern is that i actually get a chance to vote myself. wouldn't that suck if i forgot or ran out of time?!

Just make sure you vote first, like putting on your air mask before assisting others! It wonderful that you are volunteering one election day. I will be camped out in front of the tube, not quite as admirable but I'll be just as nervous.

I agree about the pedestal thing but I so do not want to jinx anything by talking about what might happen if he were to win. And anyway, it's been nice to be a bit inspired by politics again rather than feeling like I'm simply picking the better of two evils. It was hard to feel a lot of love for Kerry :).

Marcy, Florida's awful close again...Obama's campaign has spent considerable time here, lending to the thinking that, unlike in the past, the Democrats have a legit chance to take a historically Republican state. If that happens, Obama's chance to win goes through the roof. I voted last Tuesday, and that seemed to be the popular way of thinking. As far as personal issues, both candidates are practically identical on their support for increased funding for NASA, so professionally I can't lose.

I remember similar optimism back when Bill Clinton was running for president, similar hope for a relative "unknown face". All things considered, his presidency was pretty fair, his moral shortcomings nothwithstanding. He was no friend to NASA, but most people don't care about NASA.

I just hope people don't come to expect more from Obama, if he wins, than is reasonable. He is NOT the answer to everything, no politician is, and should he not change all that ails America in the first 100 days is not fair to the man. As I mentioned, the only thing that concerns me is he's untested. This is a difficult world, much less country, to navigate politically as so many countries feel we are the answer to their problems. We'll see in about 48 hours!

greer--i totally hear you about john kerry! i think the republicans are facing the same issue with mccain this year and so yes, the democrats are definitely feeling the enthusiasm and inspiration. about the voting, i actually have to wait until the afternoon to vote--but don't worry, i won't forget! i guess i'm more like the flight attendant than the mom in this case. ;-)

chris--my husband has some of the same concerns you do about obama being untested, but honestly, from what i've seen of his demeanor, his not being reactionary, his way of thinking carefully and long-term--i have full faith that he'll be able to handle what comes his way. and who knows, maybe he'll surprise you with his support for nasa--it would fit into his desire to advance technology and science. the only drawback might be funding. he's definitely going to have to prioritize. re: the voting--pennsylvania doesn't have early voting in person. the only way to do it is by absentee ballot, so things will probably be crazy at the polls. i'm not sure i'd vote early, to tell the truth. it might seem anti-climactic or something. but i'm a weirdo that way!

Hey, mjrc! Kudos to you for helping to get out the vote. I wish I could do something myself, but K's off to give a seminar in Boston and I'm sitting the kids since their daycare is closed (like that will help anyone VOTE!). Not to worry - we're voting early ("and often", I tell my 1 or 2 GOP friends). I'm nervous, too, though. Only if Obama were up by 15 % across the board would I feel better. I feel like we've had 2 stolen elections in the past 8 years, and, like our Obama sign on Halloween night, they're up to their old tricks once again. Still, since all i can do is vote, i will do my part and then try to keep cool. You at least have something to do to keep you busy!

Me too. I just wish we didn't have to wait until January to get rid of George II.

wre--doing your part is the most important thing you can do at this point. so thank you! i hope k got to vote by absentee ballot before she left--but don't tell me if she didn't. i'd rather not know!

afm--one thing at a time. first let's win the election, then let's oust his highness!
