I Did a Really Dumb Thing (So What Else Is New?)

posted Sunday, 21 September 2008

A while back, my computer was running out of space on the hard drive, so I went and deleted all manner of things in an effort to make some room.

Well, in the midst of my manic deleting, I did a really dumb thing. I managed to remove the application that indicates when an email has been read. That is to say, now when I go into my yahoo and comcast mail accounts, I have no way of telling whether I've read an email. You know how usually the unread ones are bold and the read ones are lighter? Mine are all the same. It's all bold, all the time.

It's driving me crazy and I don't have any idea how to fix it and I feel extremely stupid!

Hey, mjrc. I don't know for sure about this, but I'm going to go with my man-instinct thing here (which is right more often than not, although I don't have any good statistics and won't hold it against you if you say tell me to take a hike) and say that whatever it is that controls whether or not your email program remembers if you have read an email is probably part of the email program itself. So, I would try by (a) rebooting the computer. If that doesn't work, (b) uninstall and then reinstall the email program.

Confession: I have some actual experience in this realm. About 10 years ago, maybe a bit longer (ahem), I deleted a file on my harddrive that told the computer where ALL the files were. So, I effectively deleted everything. Including about a year of work on my ph.d. dissertation (which ought to tell you something). I had to completely reformat the hard drive and reinstall everything. Now, I am a fan of back ups and using the "remove software" control panel. Besides, software is so embedded into the operating system these day that you really can't do it any other way.
