Holy Mother of Blogs, It's My One-Year Anniversary

posted Friday, 16 February 2007
Yeah, can you believe it? Today is the one-year anniversary of lost in your inbox. I feel like I should do some sort of extravagant post to celebrate, but I can't decide what to say about it, other than I can't believe how much I'm still enjoying doing this. It means so much to me to be able to write about music and talk about life and other stuff with all of you. When I think about where I was a year ago, I can see how far I've come. Not only in terms of this blog, music and friendships, but also personally. I mean, a year ago, things were pretty bleak around here. I know I've said this before, but starting this blog really saved my sanity. So thank you all for sticking with me through all the ups and downs and bringing so much of yourselves to share with me.
I think I'm just going to put up a few of my favorite songs to mark the occasion.
Ben Folds Five--"Alice Childress" mp3 off Naked Baby Pictures (buy) This is the song that caused me to fall in love with Ben Folds. The piano in particular is what I'm drawn to. And the lyrics, of course. "Alice, the world is full of ugly things that you can't change. Pretend it's not that way, it's my idea of faith. You can blow it off and say there's good in nearly everyone, just give them all a chance. Try not to think about it, Alice Childress, try not to think about it ... anymore."
June Christy--"Something Cool" mp3 off Something Cool (buy) I first heard this when I was about 20 years old and it's been a part of my musical soul ever since. I've always wanted to sing it onstage. Instead, I've sung it as a lullaby to each of my kids, probably warping them in the process. Oh well. I know this isn't to everyone's taste--it is a vintage tune--but you should listen to it at least once. It tells a perfect story about the remembrance of things loved and lost.
The Blue Nile--"Let's Go Out Tonight" mp3 off Hats (buy) I've posted this song before, but not this version. I really don't think music can be any more gorgeous than this. Not much else to say.
Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris--"This Is to Mother You" mp3 off Western Wall: The Tucson Sessions (buy) You all probably know this from Sinead O'Connor, but this is a lovely duet. My understanding is that she wrote this song for herself, to mother herself. I've always thought of it in terms of singing it to someone else, not to myself, but as I get older it becomes more meaningful to me as she originally intended it.
Modest Mouse--"Dashboard" mp3 off  We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank (buy) Modest Mouse is my daughter's favorite band. I mentioned to her that I thought this song was a bit more cheerful than most MM songs. She said, you mean you think their music is sad? I looked at her and said, well, they sing about death and dying and loneliness and such, so yes, I do think their music falls into the sad category. But this song represents a turning point for them and for me, in that it would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know, the dashboard melted but we still have the radio, you know? So this is my current theme song. I wish I could make a stronger claim, but this is as much as I can honestly summon. Today. Here's to tomorrow.

Now the trick is to get Pik to pay you a bride price, rather than have to pay him a dowry. I recommend that you settle for nothing less than six cows, 25 kilos of the finest Swiss chocolate, and 100 CDs of your choosing...

Belated greetings and congratulations Marcy! As you know I just went through the one-year-blogging thing as well... (though via 3 different blogs now!).

Anyway, I am obviously delighted that The Blue Nile have the honour of being featured as part of of 1 year celebrations. A band close to my sad old heart.

Take good care and good luck for the next 12 months!

Love Colin.xx

colin--it's never too late, remember that. thanks so much, for everything. it's been a rocky year in a lot of ways, but at times a really good one, too. so here's hoping the good outweighs the bad in the coming year. : )
