Oh my god, yesterday I got an email from an elderly aunt of mine. The subject line was: "Why don't you keep in touch?" In the email she goes on to say:
Dear Marcy, It puzzles me that you do not keep in contact with us. I will be age 91 in May, the Lord willing. Do you realize how time goes by and then we wish we would have taken the time to keep in touch? In case you still want to keep in touch I will give you more details of family. If I do not hear from you I will not write again. Your brother has also given up keeping in touch.
Love, Aunt P.
Ahhhhh!!!!!! Talk about laying a world-class guilt trip! I wrote back immediately. Apologized my ass off and tried to explain. Oh, god, I hope she didn't die between yesterday and today, coz I really want to keep in touch and know what's going on in the family.
Murder Mystery--"Baby, You Can Write Me a Letter" mp3 off Are You Ready for the Heartache Cause Here it Comes (buy)
Elvis Costello and the Brodsky Quartet--"The Letter Home" mp3 off The Juliet Letters (buy)
Don't worry Marcy. She'll be dead soon and then you won't have to bother.
Oh, and while I'm at it, that Brodsky Quartet album has some great stuff on
it, don't you think. Some total and utter rubbish, but some of it I really
do like. And, inevitably, it's very attached to a rather specific time of
my life too, as these things often are.
thanks, i feel so much better! and yes, i agree about the album. i love the
song that follows this one, jacksons, monk and rowe. or it's before, i
can't tell on my itunes. and you're right, the connective power of song and
time is about as strong as scent and memory.
Dear Auntie, I am not 91 and I got shit to do. Good luck.
Dude! What is up with the guilt trip? I don't really talk to any of my old
Aunt's. In fact my grandma's sister, I can't stand. I only converse with
her when I have to.
If she doesn't hear from you, she won't write again? Like she really
brought you up to date in that email. All she told you was that she was
going to be 91. I think she's just fishing for a birthday card! ;)
dan--you are going to hell! in an old lady's handbasket, no less. ;-) how
was austin?
You know what I can't get over? The fact that your 91 year old Aunt uses a
freaking computer! And not only does she use a PC but she freaking
corresponds via email?!!! That is crazy! But major props to her.
hey, i have officially avoided the shit-list, as she wrote back today to
thank me for writing to her so promptly. whew! that was a close one. and i
totally agree, she is way cool for being on email at her age. i'll have to
tell her when i write back . . . :)
mjrc, sounds like you're off the hook... for now. I would be pretty
peeved, though, and have to agree with the
bitchy-guilt-trip/retired-folks-don't-get-it sentiments. Perhaps you
should direct her to your blog - Oops, I guess it's too late for that!
