A Hole in My Soul

posted Sunday, 12 November 2006
It's no secret that I've been struggling of late. Well, let's say for the past two years--that's lately, right? I seem to flucuate between feeling really, really bad and not feeling a whole lot of anything. I have my occasional up moments, which tell me all is not lost, but they aren't as frequent as I'd like.
Anyway, part of my problem is that I feel disconnected spiritually. (Jesus--are you listening?) I'm just not sure my soul is still intact. I suppose it is. I mean, otherwise I'd be dead, right? But it's definitely not firing on all cylinders. Too many disappointments, too much disillusionment, too much heartbreak and loss in too short of a time have damaged it.
I'm working on it, though. I mean, writing this blog is very therapeutic, as is seeing my therapist. Talking with friends is helpful, too. But it's simply not healing like it should. I'm not sure what the point of this is, other than to ask for your patience and to let you know that if you stick around, you'll be sure to witness the ups and downs of my journey--whether you want to or not. And to say thanks for listening.

Simple Kid--"Staring At The Sun" mp3 off 1 (buy). This is not the TV on the Radio song.
UNKLE--"Lonely Soul" mp3 off Psyence Fiction (buy).
Metric--"Empty" mp3 off Live It Out (buy).
It goes without saying that I highly recommend whatever I post, but these three songs are really great. The UNKLE song is almost symphonic, it's so lovely. Just after the 6 min. mark, it turns into something else entirely, with the syncopated marching-band drum riff propelling it against the sustained strings in an almost--dare I say it?--uplifting way.

Hey, mjrc. Just keep on talkin', sweetie. I once heard therapy described as talking over and over about what bothers you until it doesn't anymore. It's not that simple, of course, but the conversation is the main thing. Your soul is definitely intact, and it is a good one.

Love that Simple Kid - cracks me up when he says "Spend our days smokin' pot, wonderin' how we got so f*cked up". Duh. Like the sound of Metric, too. My kind of band. Thanks for making my day a little better.

I feel that you were speaking my own thoughts with that post. Hang in there. Little by very little, it gets better.

so are most bloggers actually depressed people or does it just so happen that the blogs i like to read are written by sad souls? : )

I think it's so brave of you to be able to say how you feel and a tremendous demonstration that you've built a network of friends around you. As to spirituality, I find that volunteering regularly helps me feel spiritually centered, as well as providing a lot of perspective on whatever is going on in my own life. Good luck with everything!

Hey Marcy, I think many of us are on the same journey. Can I point you to a post I wrote back in August on my mother-in-law's funeral? It's at http://pogoagogo.blogspot.com/2006/08/she-is-now-wherever-we-are.html. Not sure if you saw it, but there are links to two poems, Rilke's "Letters To A Young Poet" and "The Guesthouse" by Rumi, that I have found very centering.

fraser--thanks for being so supportive. i feel extremely fortunate to have gotten to know so many truly kind folks through this blog. i know it does a lot of good to get outside of yourself, even and especially when you're feeling like i do. so i'll try.

fil--i do remember reading that post, but i will definitely re-read it and the poems. *gathers loads of kleenex in preparation* : )

and to you both--i don't count either of you among my fellow sad bloggers, just so you know!

I think it's great and very positive that you say upfront that you are using blogging as therapy. I think way too many people use it as therapy without admitting it and without confronting the effect on the reader.

Looking for something new in spirtuality? Try Buddhism, now better than ever. Its long-lasting taste and slim design deliver that smooth, satisfying spirituality flavour that you just can't get from other religions. Buddhism: pick up a pack today! ;-)

If your real personality is anything like your blog one, then you are a nice person and deserve happiness.

aw, mentok, that's really nice of you to say. i'm probably a little bitchier in real life, but i try to stay true to my real self as much as i can. i try to keep in mind that it's a process, which is a fairly buddhist way of looking at things, right? : )
