PHILLY CONNECTION

Herman Jolly--Is That a Made-Up Name or What?

posted Wednesday, 20 June 2007

Do you suppose Herman Jolly is his real name? Do you think he pronounces it like Angelina does? Um, probably not.

Silly musings aside, I love his stuff. It's not necessarily jolly but it's certainly not downbeat, either. It's very intriguing, out-of-the-ordinary indie rock that grabs me each time I hear it. I find there's just the right combination of crank/grunge and brightness to the guitars and inventiveness to the vocals and harmonies. His cover of "Yesterday" notwithstanding, the music evokes the Beatles from time to time in certain snippets of melody or chords (for instance, in the chorus of "1,000,000 Feet Below").

My current favorite song is "Days Are Long." It doesn't actually say much, lyrically. In fact it's a pretty simple song, but he plays with it and massages it so that it says a lot more than you think it would. My favorite lines are "these days will knock you, knock you down" and "days are long / days are long / sun is strong / sun is strong." I like to listen to this one when I'm out for a ride. It's a bit on the mellower side of some of the other songs on this album, several of which are floating around the interwebs if you want to sample them.

Angelina Jolie fills me with indifference, FiL. All the features are perfect but when they're all put together the whole seems enormously less than the sum of the parts. Just don't find her attractive at all. Mrs. Toad doesn't believe me, but it's true.

What I came here to say, before I got distracted, was that I thought Elvis Perkins was a made-up name too. It sounds too borderline absurd to be real, although of course I now know that it is.

fil--i think actually DID feel that zap of psychic positivity last night. i sorely needed it at the time, too. : )

matthew--it's funny, i always thought she was sort of unreal--too beautiful, too perfectly odd, but i saw her interviewed by jon stewart on his show and she came across as fairly authentic. so whereas i'm not attracted to her per se, i do think more of her as a person and "humanitarian," such that she is. and besides that, she is way too damn skinny for my taste. ;-)

No, Marcy, I'd agree with you that she is an honest, genuine person, or at least she seems one. All I mean is that she a/ too scrawny as you say and b/ facially not appealing to me. I really don't understand it either, but I don't. Not too beautiful but actually not beautiful. I don't get it.
